Does anyone else..
..have the fear, that everything you've done on the internet is some day going to come back and haunt you?
I am always concerned about my public record - i wont join any clubs because i dont want to be labelled and tarred with it - im careful about what i put on my debit cards because i dont like leaving trails - i'm even sometimes worried about the contents of my VHS and DVD collections - not that theres anything bad in them - but imagine if you heard Tony Blair went out and bought secretary, or a clockwork orange, or the darkroom or something.
Yes, im needlessly paranoid, and yes, its very egotistical of me to ever think anyone would ever care so much as to do that much snooping into the contents of my life, but its a nagging fear.
I always suspect that whatever i do, i'm never going to be able to make a clean break from "Deffeh", which is a rather frightening prospect. All the music, the porn, the sites, everything ive ever been to, is a history, and a link. Some day the fact i once said "lol ******s lol" or something is going to get me fired from a job.
Does anyone else have this fear? That they are unable to hide their past and fade into obscurity?

Not really, I don't do anything that I could see me ever caring about someone knowing at any point in time. Except my parents but worrying aobut that would just stop me doing too much so I ignore it.

Yes. I often have a nagging feeling that the occasional references I make to pedophillia, "dead girls don't say no" and the very rare joke of "Hitman for hire" will some day come back and bite me on the arse

Re: Does anyone else..
I do worry, but that's why I don't talk much about my personal life or post incriminating things on the internet. Shame really - there's some great stories - but I know too many internet-savvy people who'd get a kick out of making me look an arse

Re: Does anyone else..
I do worry about that, but not so much on this forum. There's very little reason for anybody to link this to my real self, and what would be the gain from it? It's not like the best stories get here, more just hints and references!

Re: Does anyone else..
Not exactly. I'm not ashamed of anything I've written online (I think) and most of the stuff I write I keep in mind that anyone could read it. It does mean I could be fired / denied employment in the future but I'm not overly worried about that.
Having a relatively uncommon name means that people can easily find some of the things I've written, and if you google my name (as we've gone over before) you'd find that I'm into Marxism, databases, poker, Elite 2, the LSE, evolution, Duckman and DVDs. None of which I find particularly embarrassing (yet).
I tend to google someone's name if we get a new person at work, just so I can see if they've got an online footprint (they rarely do, although increasing numbers of youngish people turn up on Friends Reunited). So I expect other people to do the same. AFAIK google will remove indexed pages in certain contexts if you ask them to, so I guess it's not much of a worry.
I am occassionally surprised however. I use the name 'Dante' on my blog (for reasons already discussed), as I do in clubland. However, as that's much more common I'm not overly concerned about the two being connected. A few weeks ago though, I was talking to some one I vaguely knew in a club and they happened to mention they had read my blog. As I hadn't given them the link (or even mention I had a blog) I did find this kind of odd. I initially thought maybe someone I had told had passed it on, but they just said "Well, there's only a limited number of Dante's in the world.". Thinking about it, it's trivial to find it, if you search for 'Dante' and one other restricting term on Google's Blogsearch. Never underestimate the will and ingenuity of a bored office worker I guess.
But anyway, in that context, from reading they would have found out I'm a drunken, drug taking degenerate with an unhealth fascination for younger girls. But since at the point I was talking to them I was probably drunk, high and leering at some 16 year old, I doubt it was that much of a shock.
If one day I am ever ashamed of the things I believed / said (or even bought) then I probably deserve to suffer for it anyway.

Re: Does anyone else..
You pretty much just made my thread and put me at ease right there.
But even still. I'd like to think one day if i make it as anything, i can leave the Deffeh years far behind, for several reasons, and the internet makes it harder. I even use different usernames on different websites, never use my real name, because i dont like the sections of my life to mix. I have to say, even since i've met people online, i'm more uneasy here.
Its strange; but you wouldnt talk about your sex lives with your parents, or you wouldnt talk about your mental anguish with your laddish drinking mates, you wouldnt talk about paedophilia and internet jokes with girlfriends/potential girlfriends. Thats how the internet makes me feel, its tying all the different parts of my life together, and im not too chuffed about it

Very true, me too
Maybe they'll let me explain the jokes. I can always slap my thighs and laugh really heartily to emphasise them

I used to keep things very separate but as I've got older I've lost some of the desire for that. I guess it depends on what type of life you plan on leading. A while ago I got horribly drunk with a bunch of my work colleagues and told everyone who wanted to listen that I'm a regular drug user and took amphetmaines every day at work for a period. It was mildly embarrassing the next work day but it's not like anyone actually gave a shit. I suspect if T&F did that at his job he'd be fired pretty much straight away.
Are you planning on becoming a Tory MP, Deffeh? What sort of life are you going to leading where you're ashamed of paedophile jokes?

Re: Does anyone else..
I want to be a policy maker, or an academic, man. I'm three years through politics now, and i am going to go on and do a masters, probably a PhD eventually too.
Dont have any desire to be in office or anything, thats not the thing.
Im even worried about writing down "what i believe" right now in case some day i look back and reject it outright - i'm 20 now, i cant forever write off everything i do as "because im young".
For instance, recently i've been toying with a pet project on anti-democracy, which if i ended up in the civil service or something, im sure would see me in trouble

I think that's being overly cautious. Most people accept your views are going to change through your life. There's a Russell quote which says something like 'Yes I've changed my mind since x. No physicist would be proud to hold the same opinions for fifty years, so why should a philosopher?" or something like that.
I mean, wasn't Peter Mandleson in the Communist Party at one point?

I think you'd have to say something pretty damn extreme for it to get you into trouble years later.
