"The Queen"
This past weekend, my wife and i went to see the movie "The Queen."
It was rather interesting and well acted. I was wondering if the movie has been released in the UK and if any of you have seen it.
The movie was basicly about the death of Diana and the reaction of the British royal family, the public and the government to that event.
The movie, in my opinion, made Tony Blair look rather good, made his wife look rather bitchy, portrayed Charles as a wlimp, Phillip as a bastard and HRM as a sympathetic figure who was in rather a tough spot trying to react to an unprecidented situation.
If any of you have seen this movie, I would like to know what your reaction to it was.
If you haven't seen it then feel free to contribute opinions without any foundation, same as always.

I haven't seen it, but I tend to agree with Yahwe - I'm uncomfortable with the idea of the Queen being portrayed in a film. The clips I've seen of the movie confirmed this. As for the portrayals you mentioned earlier, they're extremely stereotypical and so have a decent chance of being completely wrong.

Re: "The Queen"
What's your greatest objection to this? Is it because she is still alive? What if it's autobiographical?

No, just the Queen. I'm perfectly happy to mock God, Muhammed and Vishnu in a variety of ways, but the Queen is sacrosanct. I'm not going to pretend that this is a logical view, but that's just how it is.

Re: "The Queen"
seen it couple of months ago. it was pretty good (my sisters liked it more), and it managed to give a pretty good insight on the british royal family and somehow gave me a better understanding of the way they see things, it brings out a "poor little rich girl" feeling. you can't help it but sympathise with her.
worth watching

Re: "The Queen"
I don't think the film exists to mock her though.
This might sound bizarre, but I think of the Queen as some sort of responsible granny figure. So anything making fun of her would be like something that makes fun of my gran - which obviously I wouldn't like. I'm not sure if that's the same as what furball's trying to say, but I wouldn't use the word "reverence" to describe my feelings about her.

Re: "The Queen"
I enjoyed the movie. It actually became one of my must buy and have on DVD.
It was for me a very heartwarming drama about a character i more or less only knew from pictures and rather critical reports being brought to me from a press clearly biased against her.
Although she might come out as rather stiff and unable to grasp reality at times, it also told me about a person who's entire upbringing was challenged and forced to think different.
All in all, I liked the movie and recommended it to my friends who in turn also liked it.

edit tk is partly right some vague feelings of granny hood have filtered into the old bint, i have no hesitation in despising her grandsons though, especially as they seem overly keen to go and fight for the occupation of another country.

Biographies should only be made about interesting people. I wouldnt go to watch a film about the Queen or David Beckham because I would almost certainly end up bored. I would however go to watch a film about Richard Feynman.

Helen Mirren
Phwoaar
I saw the movie sometime ago and while I was getting a bit bored I soon got into it. It's well acted and quite life like. Pretty much how I saw the royals to be. I think a film like that is good in this day and age.
It may or may not be historically correct but it certainly means people have a higher opinion of the royals. It's one thing people not seeing, hearing from them but eventually that too will be their demise.
At least a film like the Queen keeps the royals in the spotlight, and alas look we are talking about them!
In summary, a good film.
Helen Mirren.

qft, although the life of Alan Turing would probably make a better biography. Feynmann would make a brilliant teacher, but id stereotype a biographical movie going something like
scene 1
be wacky
scene 2
genius
scene 3
wacky
Turing's life has the bitterness and despair at its heart that makes it British. Feymann was...hollywood.

Re: "The Queen"
I dunno, Turing would be another good subject for a film but it would be too easy to make some generic 'genius broken by irrational society' sob-story rather than focusing on his achievements. Horribly cliche 'human interest' angles need to be avoided at all costs (Beautiful Mind for instance).
I would also watch a film about Paul Erdos.

Yes, pro-monarchy propaganda is what is corrupting the youth of today.
