Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

OK.

I just decided to stop my newspaper subscriptions and just order journals/magazines without stupid stuff instead. The week-to-week news are alot more interesting than the day-to-day news anyways.

So far, I'm planning on getting:
The Economist (for economy, general and right'ish news)
Le Monde Diplomatique (for left'ish, cultural and humanoria stuff) (Norwegian version though)

Any other must-reads? I know I've read quite a few good magazines at random places when abroad, but I'm damned if I can remember the names

(must be in English, Scandinavish or Russian.. and pretty much any topic goes as long as it feeds my self-image of trying to be quasi-intellectual)

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

Rather than reading magazines, have you considered following academic journals? You could probably get a subscription to something that interests you at a similar price, or maybe look around bookshops or something - theres a secondhand place near me that has loads of backissues of JCS at 3 pound each, which is pretty awesome.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

I like some of the stuff in 'New Scientist' magazine, and I'd go as far as to say it's pretty intellectual - I've come across especially interesting reads on space exploration, cloning, evolution, animals, global warming, etc...

Ugh New Scientist is horrible, its really sensationalist and gives a disproportionate amount of space to highly speculative fringe science (SCIENTISTS DISCOVER UNIVERSE IS A HOLOGRAM!!!!). From what I've seen, Scientific American is better.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

One look at the headlines at the 'New Scientist' website tells me it's out of the picture yeah. I don't need to get stupidier.

The scientific journals, aren't they a bit too heavy though? I usually read while I'm eating or just really bored, and I'm not paying *that* much attention.. and I do end up reading enough heavy papers at work.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

The Economist is a good magazine, I am trying to convice the people of quote magazine that I want to cancel my subscription and when that is done I am going to get the economist.

A good thing about the ecomist that, although it is western-centered, it isn't hugely UK or American centred; a bonus I say.

I used to subscribe to the Economist and probably will again. But it's dreadfully smug.

"Nature" isn't too heavy going, but it costs a bomb.
I like the national geographic, but that's just because some of the photography is immense.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

Another vote for The Economist. And I've never thought of it as 'empire centric'... I once read The Spectator (a UK only magazine really) and I felt ill for some hours afterwards.

I was going to make a thread about this (something I read in The Economist, New Year edition) before but I couldn't be arsed. But apparently someone found a link between brain tumours and paedophilia. A guy was arrested in the US on charges of amassing child-porn and before they could charge him it was discovered he had a brain tumour. After a while his brain tumour left him, and so did he desire to amass child porn. After a while it came back, and so did his desire. The economist linked this into a discussion on free-will. The point is, The Economist is interesting (assuming they're not lying or anything).

I quite like The New Scientist as well, although I've only read the occasional issue.

I wouldn't read journals unless there's a specific topic you want to read about, like articles on the Norwegian Parliament or something. You could subscribe to a database of journals, but I find magazines far more pleasant to read and I only read journal articles if I've an intense need to learn about something specific.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

I've bought a few copies of The Atlantic recently, and found the articles interesting. The New Yorker as well, although that carries a rather pretentious tone. Both are 'liberal', insofar as Americans can be, and seem to have a slight Democrat bias, though not massively so.
Atlantic is monthly, and Borders sell it for about £4 and The New Yorker is weekly (although they seem quite proud of the fact that it's 47 (I think) issues rather than actually 52...), and is about £3 in Borders

If you are a student, you can access loads of journals from the university pc's.

For norwegian magazines, go to http://www.tidsskriftforeningen.no/ and "medlemmer".

The only one I read regulary is this: http://www.tidsskriftforeningen.no/i...edlemmer/roedt

For an international magazine; http://www.monthlyreview.org/

I had never heard of it, and actually wasted two minutes finding out what it was, only to realise I hadn't heard of a single person they were referring to.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

The National Geographic is quite good though only monthly. Others have already mentioned it but The Economist is worth a read.

It is unlikely you would even consider these but avoid Accountancy and Accountancy age, even if you get given them for free.

Yes, you're right. I wanted to use that most holy of words 'centric' so much that I wrote a vacuous sentence just to impress people on the internet merely to reinforce my horrifically waning self-esteem. Oh it's happened again. Oh yahwe of the internet forum General Discussions, whatever will I do?

I'm guessing he wants to read about UK parliamentarians about as much as I want to read about Norwegian parliamentarians.

Re: Suggestions for Non-Stupid Weekly/Monthly magazines

I like National Geographic.

Last issue it had a story about the Amazon rainforest and the institutionalised corruption that prevails in the Brazilian government with regard to forresting et al.

It also had a story about Blue Whales (I think, they were big whales anyway) but the best thing about this was the pictures.

Next was a story about Dubai and the problems of the immigrant workforce that get ignored because the spotlight is on the glitz and glamour of the place rather than the degradation of the workers there.

There was also a story about Arctic explorers, which was the most interesting because I like Ray Mears.

It should be a testament to the magazine that I remember all the stories because usually I remember nothing of what I've read.

Also, the photography in National Geographic is of the highest standard, and I hope to take such photos in the future.

For me, if I feel like reading something, I tend to look at the journals and suchlike afforded me by my attendance at university and thus my access to Athens.
