5us
So, five are starting a new channel in October called Five US.
Now, forgive me if I'm wrong, but they're going to release a channel over here dedicated to the best of TV which comes out of the US. Adding to an already crammed array of channels such as E4, ABC1, Sky Three (for freeview only, add Sky One for Sky/cable viewers)
Now, five hardly got off to the greatest start. Grunted, they've became slightly better in recent months, but they're still not ace. I can accept that they're looking for a break in on this 'new' market. I've started watching programmes such as Hope and Faith, Rodney, Eight Simple Rules, Without a Trace and a few more. I've also continued watching things such as The Simpsons and Friends, which are somewhat classics anyway.
Of course, more are programmes such as Frasier and Will and Grace are also around but to my knowledge there are no new episodes being filmed.
As for the content of this Five US channel, I've not checked. You all know my talent for prepost research never really blossomed, however, although I somewhat admire five for bringing out this new channel, is it just going to be another channel that gets the odd few viewers and then fizzles out into obscurity? More4 anyone?
On BBC and ITV programmes are dropped because they slump to a million viewers or so, Top Gear was axed a few year back because of exactly this. With the huge amount of channels available to the viewers now, is there space for another channel dedicated to American drama's?
Just a one to ponder, my main question I guess would be, will anyone here be tuning into it?

Re: 5us
I dearly hope it gets loaded with even a fraction of the vast number of reality game shows where people degrade themselves to deeper and deeper depths in order to win some paltry amount of cash and be able to go home to all their friends and say
'Yes, I will eat donkey shit in order to be on TV and win $5,000'
That way, you'll have the option to turn it off in the same satisfying way I do.

Re: 5us
Sounds like a stupid idea, tbh. A channel filled with programmes you can see elsewhere, and if you can't see them elsewhere there's probably a good reason - namely, they're shit.
What kind of viewing figures do these types of channels get? The likes of Hallmark, Bravo, UKTVGold (this sounds a bit like a US-centred version of that), etc.
I also find it amusing that a channel that can't reach total coverage of the UK with their primary is launching a new one.
I hope it fails miserably.

Obviously some people* think so. The whole paradigm of television is evolving to more and more channels with smaller and smaller audiences. How many channels is too many? How small an audience is too small? Stay tuned!
Unless/until we're near to reaching the limit on the number of available channels, I can't see any downside to adding more.
Disclaimer: I don't watch much television but what little I do watch seems to be coming more often from smaller networks (channels), so I approve of this trend.
*People with money to invest in such a venture, anyway. :/

You forgot curb your enthusiasm, which is joint with brasseye as the best thing to ever be shown on television.
But yeah, without wanting to be overly eltiest, most mainstream television is (always has been, and always will be) lowest common denominator stuff. I'm with Tactitus; an increase in the number of smaller channels making their own stuff rather than being fed bogstandard 'big name' programs will most likely lead to people being able to find stuff they actually want to watch, rather than being stuck with the same generic 'made-for-everyone' crap you get on normal TV. There's an obvious comparasion to post-internet music and non-Hollywood film here.
