Unhappy gmail changing to googlemail.
Oh cock. Some bastards made google change their email service from gmail.com to googlemail.com in the UK. Non-UK residents are not affected. There is a chance they'll change our email addresses from gmail.com to googlemail.com in the future. So we need to convince them we're from chad or somewhere.

I can't find an option to change 'country of origin'... Go go go GD!

I can't see any regional setting either, they must get it from your IP.

New UK account signups may be googlemail but existing accounts aren't affected, at least not in the short term. People who send stuff to your gmail address will still reach you, and that seems unlikely to change (though they don't promise).

They seem to get your country from the IP you used when you signed up.

Either someone starts a thread on gmail groups saying: I created my gmail account when on holiday in the UK, I'm not back in chad. Can you please provide a service that will allow me to change my account from a UK account to a chad account? Or just delete your gmail account, get someone not in the UK to start up the same account and give it back to you. Did I mention how much I ****ing love the dutch Leshy?

What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will that address ever change?
Unfortunately, we don't know. We would love to say that your address will always remain the same. But the trademark issue is still unsettled, and unfortunately, we cannot predict what the other party or the courts might do here. You can always use your same username with an @googlemail.com address to avoid this issue later on. But trust that we will do the best we can to make sure your email address won't ever have to change.

Unfortunately, we don't know. We would love to say that your address will always remain the same. But the trademark issue is still unsettled, and unfortunately, we cannot predict what the other party or the courts might do here. OK... So where did you find that bit? I've read and re-read the page you linked to and the BBC News version and can't find the bit you pasted anywhere. All I can find is:

Well, it's not like they have to turn over the domain, so there'd be no technical reason they couldn't forward mail on.

Although in an article I had read the guy who had registered the g-mail trademark said he had also done so in the United States. And apparently he had been contacted by various parties who were willing to contribute any legal action (in exchange for a slice of the pie of any settlement).

Well, the people who've been using gmail in the UK could demand google stop using gmail.com for uk users altogther, which could also prohibit forwarding. It all depends how arsey the UK company gets.
