Why not?

In any case, I wasnt really talking about different goals for different people. The education system shouldn really be there to teach anyone how to get a job - employability should be a side-effect, not a primary goal. Teaching people 'how to get a job' seems like a pretty silly idea anyway - if I were employing people then I'd prefer someone who'd been given a good classical education over someone who's schooling had largely consisted of learning how to answer phones and use Microsoft excel, or whatever it is we're talking about.

My point being that Plato's model held the pursuit of wisdom as the preserve of the blessed few. Would the worker and warrior classes in his model be encouraged to learn about using spears/looms/whatever correctly, or to discuss good governance of Athens?

I think it's generally established that by modern standards Plato was a bit of a twat (ethically speaking). Obviously western philosophy is a footnote, blah, blah but still.
