Re: looking for a word
hmm.. maybe it's not that then.
I'll give an example. say someone says that they "have studied evolution for years, and there are absolutely no examples of transitionals", then they are conveying false knowledge.

there is a better word, i know the one you mean although, similarly, cannot bring it to mind.
However, bullshitter should serve your purposes.

Re: looking for a word
That isnt what 'pretentious' means, your best bet is probably 'charlatan' (as someone else said). You could also get away with 'quack' or 'mountebank', although the former seems too informal for most contexts(and has medical connotations), while the latter is too obscure.

Re: looking for a word
Oh yeah, theres always 'crank' which has sciencey connotations anyway. This is probably more suited to describe someone who is claiming professional level expertise though, rather than someone who just says theyve read a few books about evolution or claims to have taken a couple of undergrad level courses.
I dont think theres any other words in common English which mean what you describe, although 'fraud' and 'phoney' are more general terms for that sort of thing.

Re: looking for a word
well I have been asking around, and apparently it is one of the definitions of "ignoramus" and I think that might have been the one. I looked up the word a couple of times, but only found the basic definitions of "ignorant" or "dunce"
during my search however I chanced upon the rather excellent pseudosopher, which really does mean "one who pretends to hold knowledge or wisdom" which almost exactly fits the bill.

quoth Gordon Pollock QC in reply to a judicial question to Mr Justice ***** "My Lord that is the stupidest thing I have heard said in a courtroom; even from you."

Re: looking for a word
Just once before I retire I would like to say something of that sort.
The closest I ever got was telling a judge that I had done my best to straighten out that which she had done her best to "screw up." I was told later that she had contemplated having me held in contempt and remanded into custody except that my younges son was present in the courtroom at the time.

Re: looking for a word
your contempt rules might be different from ours, but one of the joys of the bar is speaking frankly and perhaps insultingly to a judge.
standing calmly while they rant and threaten you with contempt.
then asking sweetly "my lord/your honour what is the legal test for contempt?" (If you really want to twist the knife you can add "You can always sue me in defammation my lord/your honour .... If I am incorrect" <- I've never gone this far but only because i am a coward)
But you now understand I hope why Gordon Pollock is my pin up QC.

Re: looking for a word
For you I did a google image search!
There were 6 'hits' only 2 of them him.
We barristers are bashful types.
http://www.essexcourt.net/gallery/cvs/gpollock.JPG (though it's a little small to be a poster. But as skiddy will tell you Borris Johnson MP can become a celebrity with t-shirts and badges, then who is to say who else might not achieve such ends?)
P.S. I happen to know a limmerick written by oliver wendall-holmes

well I found it on a rare words site. It might be in the OED somewhere though. Or it might just be that someone has just stuck together the greek roots.
