Static?

I'm a bit prone to static...

I just got a new box here in work (very sexy) and wanted to transfer over about 15gb from my current machine.

So I simply put the drive from my old machine into my new one...

Nada...

So I put it back...

Nada...

Is it possible that a burst of static killed it? It simply isn't detected by the new or old machines at all now

Any idea where to send dead disks, and how much it will cost?

static could conceivably kill most things in a pc..

personally i dont touch anything inside of one without earthing myself first (eg on a radiator)

as for data recovery, theres a million and one people that can do it, and they advertise left right and centre (almost as much as the bloody 'have you had a fall in the last 19 years?' adverts!) and their prices range from cheap (under £50) to lots and lots

Well, the damn thing doesn't even go "Whirrrr" anymore. So I assume this is beyond a BIOS problem, or that I moved jumpers etc?

a long time ago, my m8s HDD just went dead, couldn't get it working after that and had to get it replaced.

btw, he was putting a new comp together, it possible he killed it by static...

I'm debating whether it's worth forking out to get the stuff recovered...

There's some work that would require duplication, plus a load of emails. Apart from that, I think I'll live without the rest I think.

Win98SE crapped out on me yet again and I could only boot into safe mode without getting a BSOD.

I had to get a 2nd HDD so I could copy important stuff over because I couldn't use my CDRW...

anyway, I just ordered WinXP, bye bye Win98se... forever... I hope.

I'd say it sounds like the controller or motor or something like that has frizzled... think it's possible and/or worth it, to try and get it fixed?

i dunno about fixed, but data recovery should be a viable option, especially if its only the motor gone. They'll read your data straight off the platters

obviously if you've got naughty stuff on there i wouldnt recover it.. isnt that how gary glitter got caught? (obv. not making any comparisons!!!)

I do have some "non-work related" movies on there, some of them not suitable for viewing in polite company ;-)

But anyway... you think it'd be costly to recover, as it's prolly just the motor that's shot...?

Is this a secondary hard drive? If its the primary and nothing is happening, it could be that something else is stopping the PC from initialising the HD. I'm assuming you have tried different power connectors?

The annoying thing is that I've been given the old system, but I've destroyed the hard disk! Argh! The gift was our "Xmas Bonus" to avoid taxes (worth about £350)
