Re: Horny Brummies
it made the front page of the local paper, something like "web porn shame of the west midlands". Technically it was West Bromwich that won out of the whole world, with Birmingham 2nd, Solihull 3rd iirc.
I think the shame must refer to the use of the word "porn" in searches - other regions know how to go directly to the good stuff

Re: Horny Brummies
So you're proud of the fact that a ****ing shopping centre made it to the top place in a poll of Britain's favourite landmarks?
Disgustin', I calls it.

Re: Horny Brummies
Yes I am
Maybe not at the fact that its a shopping centre but the fact Birmingham is receiving some recognition. For years we have had an image problem. Our people are seen as being dumb, our skies are seen to be grey and our buildings are relics of the 60s. At last Birmingham is seen as a place where you could spend a weekend and see a fair few things.
The Bullring itself is really quite beautiful as far as a building goes. Inside its just a glass roof and its always light and airy, the design is really quite beautiful and well thought out. The Bull that was made for the bullring is quite iconic and it fits well. Not only that but the way they restored the medievil church (st martins) and made it the focal point of the bullring is great. Finally the selfridges building just looks amazing and stands out.
Building wise Birmingham is changing. Theres been a new hotel thing built which looks amazing, new apartments and as well as that the regeneration of old buildings such as the council house and other buildings. The city centre is changing and becoming more pedestrianised.
Birmingham has some interesting stuff being built which like Birmingham as the place and its people is quite unique and off the wall. It makes you stop and look at it. Im proud that the city is finally getting the recognition it deserves and hopefully businesses will see it as a future centre as oppose to Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester. This in turn can mean more investment and Birmingham can cement itself as a great city in Britain.

Re: Horny Brummies
The Spinnaker is an outstanding building to look at, the problem with it is that it's completely useless.
Apart from the Selfridges part of the Bull Ring, it's a horrible building. No Battersea Power Station in the list either.

Re: Horny Brummies
Very good point, but Birmingham is a major city and has a problem with its image. Thats why wherever I go I lyrically wax to southerners and northerners about how good Birmingham is.

Birmingham is southern. That's probably half of the reason why it's been so shit up to now.

Re: Horny Brummies
We are Midlands, geography is often something difficult to grasp in this country, but we are in the middles of the country. We are not the south or the north. WE are unique. Great places in the Midlands, full of chilled out entertainers.

Re: Horny Brummies
I disagree strongly theres many things in the south after living here for 3 years that I cant identify with.
The way they speak
The way they seperate chip shops and kebab shops
The way they dont sell holland pies
The way they dont have plastic containers for chips and curry sauce or gravy
The way they sound annoying and high pitched
They way they are rich
I could go on, but I feel more isolated in the south compared to other northern citites.

The timing coincides with when I started working from home!
Pig: Do you know what is going on with the Rotunda? They have removed a lot of the outer walls and it looks like it could be coming down.

Re: Horny Brummies
Its not coming down, they have sold it off to people wanting flats.
The flats cost something between 150 and 250 k or something. Was on midlands today. Anyway apparently it will look all shiny and new when its finished. I wanted one of those flats would have been rock and roll living in the rotunda. Now all they need is a restaurant at the top which moves around clockwise. That would be hot.

Re: Horny Brummies
I travel into brum every other week. Infact i was there only 3 days ago and i live no more than 15minutes outside...
Pig is right about it tho. It is a shithole ...no wait...it WAS a shit hole in terms of architecture and 'ew its so dirty'. However it seems to be undergoing massive regeneration atm and parts of it are just 'swell'. I do quite like the bullring and the new dunlop building when finished should be quite ace. The centre is quite nice now too.... However the suburbs are still a monstrosity esp the apartment tower blocks :/

Re: Horny Brummies
It's about 6 years since I've been to Birmingham, but it was a drab, grey, concrete Jungle then with very little that jumped out and excited me about it... It was also a bit like a black hole, seemingly impossible to avoid, and seemingly impossible to get out once in there.
I've spoken to 4 folk on my travels who've spent time in Birmingham (at three seperate meetings, so thats 2 - 1 -1 ), three Japanese girls and a Finnish girl... One of the Japanese girls and the Finnish girl were both living and studying there (at different occasions, they didn't know one another), and both said they had to terminate their studies and return home because it was too depressing... The other two said, 'it was ok'....
My perceptions to date of Birmingham are really not good....

Birmingham is a nice place to 'visit' but a horrible place to 'live' presumably.

I'd agree with the added clause that it's "the sort of place you drive through".
