please stay away from the whole 'i hate anime' & 'you suck' flaming that anime threads can sometimes provoke by closeminded people. If you don't like anime you're more than welcome to say so in a civil manner - there are many who genuinely don't, but this thread is inteded for those who do...


So I'm running out of Anime shows to download/watch - I was hoping there is someone here who could offer something new? I'm not talking Gundam or DBZ, i mean 1999-present 'newish' series.

Things I've watched recently:

Read or Die - Anime about 4 girls in Japan, kinda girly, about people called paper masters who can use books and paper as weapons to fight the 'bad guys' who happen to be from the British Library (lol).

Full Metal Alchemist - Anime about 2 brothers in their quest to recover their full human bodies while getting caught up in a very complex web of military deceit, the magic/art of alchemy/transmodication, and the evil Homoncolus (artificially created humans).

Cowboy Bebop - Anime about a group of bounty hunters set in the future, and mostly in space. Very good action sequences and great characters.

Planet ES - I've only seen a few of these so far, but it seems to be a very well done space aged adventure reminiscent of Firefly, not sure how good it is yet tho.

Bleach - I'm up to episode 52, it starts slow, but the fights are amazing. Still got a way to go before I'm caught up tho, I will continue downloading this.

Naruto - I'm up to episode 4, it seems ok - I heard there's 140+ episodes (!?), so I hope I do get into this. It's about a guy who has an evil spirit trapped inside him who wants to become the #1 ninja in his village.

Escaflowne - kinda girly as well, our female hero gets transported to the Gaia on the Moon, finds true love, and the battle for both worlds Gaia and Earth ensues - with cool mechs and nice storyline.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - warped show which offers little explanation of why the bad guys from space are called Angels, or even why they're attacking Earth, but has great fight scenes. Wish they'd worked on the plot tho!

Recommended so far:

Berserk - lizardking suggested I try this out, it's next in my queue, so I hope it's another jem.


Sooooo, if you know of any decent anime shows that will be subbed or dubbed by now (tbh I prefer subs) please put a post here. And if you haven't seen some of the above, if something sounds interesting please feel free to check it out.

I don't know a huge amount about anime... (honest ) but I've been trying to watch more in the vain hope that my Japanese sounds a little less robotic and 'straight from the textbook'. A friend of mine gave me 'Samurai Champloo' to watch, which has been pretty enjoyable so far. A kind of hip-hop samurai period drama thing. Some of the musics cool (and I normally *detest* J-Hip-hop - Comes from seeing too many spackers dancing with themselves in shop windows in malls), and also, if your interested in the language at all, one of the main samurai characters talks... Pretty interestingly (as about as foul mouthed and casual as Japanese gets).
