[BBC Link] Stampede Again

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/mid...st/4606002.stm

I'm sorry but whatever religion or beliefs people harbour - how can common sense be completely thrown out of the window year after year?

No matter how fervently people belief in their religion, surely they must see that any even remotely sane deity would not expect its followers to endure such events?

Oh dear

I toyed with the idea of posting that same link but the only comment I could think of to put under it was "nutters".

For the muslims, religion is common sense for them to live in this world. Whatever happens during Hajj is an accident (even if it results in death). They (or the families of the dead) don't go about seeking compensation because of a belief (see down).

The authorities try to reduce this sort of accidents by using new strategies every year. You can't blame them, they're trying their hardest. But accidents always happens wherever you are.

Muslims also believes that if you die whilst performing Hajj, you'll be granted a one-way ticket to Heaven (no questions asked).

We can attack their beliefs but there wouldn't be a point because that won't stop another muslim from performing Hajj (if he/she hasn't done so). Hajj is that important to them no matter what.

According to Islam, anyone who dies on the way to, or during, the Hajj is a martyr and goes to heaven; so no worries. :/

Common sense aint common, it's culture specific. Plus plenty of cultures have similar dangerous rituals. The Spanish, bullfighting (Anyone know how many people die a year from that? ). In Japan, they carry massive 3 tonne statue things and crash them into one another and push them into rivers, with people on top of them, all while stinking drunk. Cant think of any other examples of the top of my head...

Bullfighting? I don't think many people die at all. Wikipedia is no help, but afaik there are very very few deaths.

Re: [BBC Link] Stampede Again

yea, a few gore-ings from the bulls and a few broken limbs but it's fairly rare that people are killed.

Never heard of the japanese thing though - sounds interesting to say the least.

the lower number of deaths doesnt make it comprehensible to other cultures, doesnt it?

Within reason.

For instance im fairly sure a couple of people die every year running the london marathon.

And that cheese-down-a-hill thing is fraught with peril.

But in this case we are talking hundreds upon hundreds - every year!

If 400 people were mauled to death by bulls every year i'm fairly sure even the spanish would drop the tradition.

Never heard of that one before Know any more about it?

The festivals Im talking about are Autumn festivals.... In this area they include

Saijyo Autumn Matsuri - Apparently the craziest round this region, theres usually a handful of associated deaths each year.

Niihama Autumn Matsuri - Also home to lots of Yaks and Bosozuku, so a Niihama born friend tells me.

Matsuyama Autumn Matsuri - you can see a small picture of this one here though I'm informed that this ones by far the tamest in this prefecture.

Sorry I can't find the Japanese names off the top of my head.

Yeah, I couldn't find any statistics on the bullfighting either when I looked after. But remember, with bullfighting, its not an annual, one place event.... Same with these 'Matsuri's'.

I think this thread should be changed to crazy ways different cultures like to kill each other in the name of tradition...
