Conrete Hell, coming soon to Iraq
Oh. Dear. God.
Who approved this exactly, and what are they smoking?
Milton Keynes is one of the worst examples of town planning ever concieved, and now they're letting those idiots loose on a holy city?
Should be... interesting.

Doesn't realy matter. If it's shit they can just bomb it and start again.

Since then though the firm has remodelled Cardiff Bay it says and despite the big ugly building it seems to have done a good job of making it nice

I like the bars , restraurants and clubs in Cardiff Bay, but that hotel looks ****ing awful, and anyone who says its been "Remodelled" is talking bollocks. All theyve done is taken an area that was totally rundown , and stuck something nice in the middle of it. The areas where people live around it are still shitholes filled with the worst of Cardiffs population.
Take a taxi from Cardiff Central and look at where you drive through before Cardiff Bay "appears". Absoloute hellhole. And at least half the male under21 population there have probably shagged Charlotte Church.
Its similar to what theyre doing in most major cities with huge sprawling riverside/seaside areas. They develop a single central part and hope that the higher quality shops and bars will rub off on the surrounding area, making it a more desirable area to live in. Over time , and its quite a long time, that does work. New , exclusive flats will be built (be first to buy one, but dont live there, because it takes years before the local population moves from Pikey to Working class with a hard work ethic) which attract richer, more "Upwardly mobile" individuals.
My personal good example is Anderston Quay in Glasgow. Used to be an absoloute shithole. Then they rebuilt it, put exclusive, expensive riverside property there, and now even the dodgy garages that reside down there are safe to take your Merc to. However it took a good 10 years to develop to that level.

Cardiff Bay is awesome, but it is right next to Grangetown (which Kura is referring to), which is a hole. Keep in mind that the Bay area used to be the old docks - perhaps then you'll understand why you have an area like Grangetown right next to it.
I like the hotel, I'm guessing Kura's the uncultured sort who doesn't like the Gherkin either.

Weve had the discussion in another thread in which i explain why i absoloutely love the Gherkin and a lot of other challenging pieces of modern architecture.
However that THING on the top of the hotel looks absoloutely ridiculous. And it will never be on my top 10 pieces of UK architecture.

It looks horrific. A floating riverboat barge with a really bad quiff (yes , i appreciate its meant to be a representation of a fish, but how badly can you fail in attempting such a task).

I remain utterly unimpressed. Someone should be shooting the architect. Ive no doubt its a fantastic hotel to stay in, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, its a "Monstrous Carbuncle" to quote HRH.

and Kura, Cardiff Bay is a stunning area. Like Furball said it does have some shit surrounding it. It is actually quite a large area and without the numerous flats being built this is also constantly expanding. Considering the shit hole it was and the relatively short amount of time they have been working on it(plus the huge deficit the council are running the area at for the moment) I think it is a wonderful place.

milton keynes is a phenomenally well-planned and altogether pretty city. people who don't believe this have either a)never been here or b)their entire experience of the place is the trying to drive into the shopping centre, on a saturday, just before christmas.

Plus it has a reputation for being the best place to go skating in the whole of the UK (and a skater-friendly council to boot).

indeed. also, as an aside (not that I'm fixated or anything) but when people criticise Milton Keynes as soulless, what do they expect? 13th century cathedrals scattered about the place? Edwardian brick avenues every so often? Because for a town which was fields fifty years ago, I think that would be a bit of a tall order. The absorbed villages (Stony Stratford, for example) have all the "character" you can chew; the town itself is just a very very nice place to live.
