[Cricket] Whitewashed
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cric...nd/6232903.stm
We have had afew chats last few nights on irc about the state of English Cricket, we just lost the 5th and final test by 10 wickets.
What would you do if you were in the management? what would you do with the team / who would you fire?

Re: [Cricket] Whitewashed
Mistakes were made before the first test in terms of preparation/warm up and selection. A few injuries did not help. At some stage in the first two tests we had a chance, but wasted the opportunities we had. By the time the 3rd test came and went we could of fielded to best XI ever but the confidence of the whole team was shot to buggery. After that they just got themselves out.
I certainly do not think the team applied themselves to the best of their ability but if I was booing anybody it would be the selectors, management and coaches first.

The team would be ok without injuries.
Vaughan and S. Jones are all we were missing.
Not playing Panesar in the first two tests was a mistake, the Jones/Read decision has just shown that we need to find a new keeper from somewhere*
Basically noone played as well as we know they can batting-wise and we were shite bowling-wise.
Flintoff, Harmison, Hoggard and Jones are a brilliant quartet of fast bowlers with Panesar there for spin.
Strauss, Vaughan, Cook, Pieterson, Bell make a strong top 5 as well with Collingwood a more than adequate reserve (although as a specialist fielder he may come in instead of Cook or Bell)
So no panic yet - for the next Ashes the Aussies will be without Warne, McGrath, Martyn, Langer, probably Hayden and Gilchrist and Ponting will be past his best as well. Yes they've got some good players coming through but so do we and replacing that many players will be extremely difficult.

Re: [Cricket] Whitewashed
Just a thought here, i heard Trescothick usually acts as reserve wicket keeper for One day tours. What about starting him as wicket keeper? Would strengthen the batting no end, perhaps at the loss of a stumping or two, but worth a shout.

Alex Stewart's average dropped when he kept wicket for England and I wouldn't expect Trescothick to hold onto his bat at the moment never mind catch a ball.

Re: [Cricket] Whitewashed
he might burst into tears at the noise of harmison running down the wicket, granted, but lets face it, england dont exactly have a lot of options right now

They do... They're just all either untried or not very good.
Prior is a name a lot of people mention that could play...
Jones and Read aren't exactly bad. Jones is making very few mistakes behind the wicket although Read pulled off a few top quality catches which I doubt Jones would have.
The problem is they are both playing badly with the bat. They have both proven they can bat previously but recently have just looked like rabbits.

Re: [Cricket] Whitewashed
Matt Prior, averages 20 in international one dayers, has a somewhat larger average for Sussex, who specialise in the 4 day game.

We were missing Trescothick as well - mentally as well as physically once he left.
You're also ignoring the value that Vaughan and Jones brought to the team. Vaughan was an extremely shrewd and intelligent captain in the field, as well as being a superb batsman. Jones was Mr. Reverse Swing, making a habit of getting out the most valuable Australian batsmen just as they started to make big scores.
We were forced to replace Jones with Mahmood - an inexperienced bowler who's only ever shown fleeting glimpses of his potential. One of our biggest problems was that we couldn't get out twenty Aussie batsmen each match, and we got hammered by Hussey/Gilchrist/Symonds/Warne when bowling with the old ball. Jones would have made an incredible difference.

Paul Nixon? Oh wonderful - he's 36, one for the future obviously.

Trescothick hasn't been at his best for a while though... But yes - a vast amount of experience lost (although Cook is 'one for the future')

No i'm not - you misinterpreted.
The difference between us being world beaters and looking pathetic was those two players.
"the team would be ok without injuries" and "all we were missing were Jones and Vaughan" says it all.

Yep. Someone on another forum heard the rumour a good few days before it was announced... But yes - he's in the squad as 'back-up keeper' for Read. Although seeing as Fletcher openly dislikes Read I imagine Nixon may start...
