Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
Really sad to see you go. I want to thank you for a great game which you provided to us. A lot of happiness but also unhappiness is what i shared within this game and it's community. I hope you get yourself a decent job so you can finally support your family in a proper way.
And have fun out there in the real world

As much as I've complained about some of PA's decisions, I never thought I would see this.
Why do I get the feeling R10 will never reach Thanksgiving... :-/

Wow, this is a tough one to write...
The deeper I've got into the workings of Planetarion, the more respect I have gained for you, Spinner. People shouldn't forget that you designed the most successful (and most copied) MMPORG there has ever been. If PaX gets the chance it deserves, I'm sure people will realise it's a much better game then PA ever was.
So, I wish you the best of luck wherever life takes you. I'm sure that after keeping control of a wife, a room of servers and 5,000 screaming kids, whatever you do next will be really easy by comparison.
BTW, I proofread your quit message, and it's flawless :-)

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
Well Spinner, I haven't spoken to you as often as I would have liked, and I don't know you very well at all, and most the times we did speak, it was about problems and nothing cheerful (and I suspect it is the same for you with most people, silent satisfaction and loud dissatisfaction and all).
However, despite all the things that have been said, and all the problems that even you yourself admitted arose, there is still the most wonderful community I have ever seen with a game which after several years is still here. Many people have enjoyed it, and there are many friendships and many a cherished moment that have graced the planetarion bandwidth. So many people have had smiles and laughs brought to their faces, warm feelings injected to their hearts and spines. I doubt there is a person in the community who can't honestly say that they did truly "laugh out loud" at some point. It is a virtual microcosm of the world with all the joy and tears that go with it, and it even expanded to real life on many an occasion. It should give you great pride to look at the community and think to yourself "I created this". It is a true marvel of grit, determination and a good idea to go with it.
I know that when I am older decades from now, and I think of planetarion, I know that the friends and the good times are what I will remember, and it will always be with a great fondness. Thankyou for that Spinner, from me, from the community and from all those whose personalities have graced this community in the past, and those who hopefully will in the future whatever it may be. I am sure that, no matter the direction of that lump of code that is the game, the community will endure a long time.
Good luck in whatever you do Spinner, and I am sure the community will always welcome you among it.

edit: Oh, and I think you are doing the right thing, I have been told many a time how much you have put into PA, and it is more than anyone can expect, I am surprised you lasted as long as you did, but one thing about PA - it claims us all in the end, we all end up having to return to real life where we have fked up due to PA at some point. I only hope you haven't left it too late like so many of us do.

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
its a shame to see one of the spirits of pa to leave again
yet i think that mainly due the problem of funds this is a result not as you only are the one leaving spinner but that the game isnt like it used to be in R3 or R4
anyways good luck with The Game as in your life.

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
with spinner leaving... PA is dead to me...
PAX was already the last round I was ever going to play...
but with spinner leaving there is nothing to hold me there.
I don't think Jolt will continue this on their own, and if they do it will never be like PA what it is now (even as PAX)...
too bad...
I wish spinner all the best and I'll bet he's still welcome on all rucphen meets yet to come ;-]
with kind regards,

EDIT:
I say we claim our money back from Jolt for PAX and donate it all to spinner so he can get a bubble bath in his new house!

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
The game dies with you. I'm sure other than fond memories (and some bad ones of course) you will be able to draw upon the experiences of the past three and a bit years and hopefully provide a less stressful and significantly more comfortable life for you and your family.
I'd be one of the first ones to point mistakes that have been made, but you cannot blame a man for simply making a few mistakes. Your conviction, dedication and enthusiasm for the game do you credit.
Very best wishes in anything you do in the future.

Shame that it has come to this but good luck with whatever you do next, without this game I wouldn't have met a lot of great people and the time I have spent here has been worth it for that factor alone.

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
I'm dumbfounded.
I can only echo many of the outpourings of best wishes that have been made by the countless others in this thread who feel the same.
I very much doubt this will be the last we see of you Spinner. Your ingenuity, drive and determination are not the marks of a man who will be content to take a weekly paycheck making someone elses dreams come true.
And when you once more take up the sword my friend, I shall be the amongst the first in your army of players.
Remember where your towel is my friend, it's a big universe out there.

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
This is a sad day.
It might surprise people to know that I have been hanging around since round 2 even if I have made an effort to remain inconspicuous. And amongst all of the problems and burp pages and rollbacks; we still played your game. It didn't matter how much I walked away I still kept on coming back and that is priceless.
It occured to me that the only reason that so many people have been flaming and giving you a hard time is simply cause of you. This is not an insult but a compliment. You provided a game of such a high standard and created such a community that the second the perfection we expected did not materialise, we complained. And the reason we complained was simply because you gave us something that good.
You have created something that is immortal. Years from now we will wonder about the time that we put our real lifes on hold for a game created by a few norweigans. And we will reminiss about the number of times that we woke up at 3am just to make sure someone wasn't hitting us. Because to us it mattered. And it will remain so.
It does not matter what you do for the rest of your life. You are a success and I wish you nothing more than the best and peace and quiet (and money ofc) that you richly deserve.
From someone who only met you a few times...and who you still refuse to accept on icq but that is all forgiven. Har det bra.

I've been here for something over three years now. Thanks for the moment I joined, this moment right now and every single one in between. I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world. Good luck.

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
Well, Spinner, you already know how I feel about the situation, but still. PA has been a great part of my life, met a whole bunch of people and friends through the game - something I wouldn't have wanted to miss for the world.
I can only guess at how much time, effort and money you've put into Planetarion over the years, and that commands respect. Thanks for everything, see you at Rucphen (even if we have to collect you in a rubber boat, fs) and best of luck with real life, and the family.
Take things easy, and I am sure we'll hear again from you in the future

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
A big thanks for the many rounds you have put your time in regardless if you hart was in it or not, you have given each and everyone of us something special. People may have not agreed with you on many occasions how ever in the end they kept on playing. Not only did you give us a game but you brought us a great community. Pa has impacted so many in different ways we have had several weddings , a few baby’s and prob even some divorces j/k because of the great community that surrounds this game. I’ve seen every round but the first and am glad I got the opportunity to meet so many , and play with such great people.
I want to wish you all the best in the future.
Stephanie

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
My god, if I were Spinner, I would truly weap as I read through these posts. That in itself is a fine example of what is so good about this game.

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
everyone's already said everything i could possibly say.
i don't regret a second of my time with PA. i've been here since r1, and loved every minute of it. i even enjoyed being on the team and working wtih the other mods (though i never did get my pacrew tshirt.. and i'll never stop being bitter about that... it's still a fond memory)
i'm so thankful for the opportunity to meet some of these people that words fail me. i know this isn't the last we'll hear from you. good luck to you and your family and thanks for everything.
Dani

Re: A sad, strange, but needed goodbye
This i really sad...
Planetarion is one of the best games I ever has played.
It is a real shame that I didn't have time to talk with you under TG03.
This game will never be the same without you.
It is really sad that you don't get your money, You deserve the money and much more!
