so what happens after somebody gets arrested? I don't really get it, and i figured this'd be the place to find out.

Re: Law [English]
I started to post what I thought the procedure was, then I realised all I knew was what I'd seen on TV, and I'd probably spout some rubbish
So I'll let yahwe answer.

Re: Law [English]
could you not have been specific?
there's lots of things that could happen.
1) you get cautioned
2) the police officers are then entitled to hold you for questioning for certain periods of time, if they think you're a terrorist for instance
3) they may just arrest you, caution you and give you a warning and let you go
4) after questioning they may decide to charge you with a criminal offence (terrorists again), or they may start to interview you with a solicitor present (your option)
5) after this the police officers have to decide whether to grant you bail or not before your first court appearance
6) if you got bail, you turn up to a local magistrates' court for your first appearance. If not they bring you up from the cells.
7) you get legal representation and are offered advice and then you make up your own mind about things like pleading guilty or electing jury trial
8) the court has to consider what you where charged with and how to proceed.
9) if you weren't given bail by the police, your representative will apply for bail from the court
do you see how tricky it gets?
if you ask a specific question maybe i can help.

10) You may 'fall down the stairs' at the police station (a few times)

I think Yahwe's question for more information still applies. As he says : A lot of offences don't get to court. Somethings will be heard entirely in the magistrates, other things may move onto another court, etc....

Re: Law [English]
what they are saying is: what are you charged with so we can tell what court your going to and what kind of sentence you are going to get so we can all have a good laugh

of course not
weall have nicer accents for a start.
but honey, i am not going to type a post that is 'everything anyone ever thought they might want to know about the judicial system'
why not pop along and visit a court? they're open to the public.

that only applies for six foot seven rugby players who jump up and down on people's kneecaps.

I thought they could hold you for an uncertain period of time if they think you're a terrorist.
