Re: The Joys Of Being Irish
The side of this guinness can says "Brewed in Dublin". So much for that theory.

Guinness from a can is not what I talk about when I say Guinness.

Well it's true.
My nationality isnt 1/8 Welsh, 1/8 French, 3/4 English (which is what I am, supposedly - going back to my great-grandparents).
I'm Englsh.
It's the same stupid argument as supporting Manchester United because your aunt's dog once got run over there (ie: trying to claim some kind of "membership" through ambiguous links). Your nationality is where you were born. You don't "inherit" blood from a vague relative.

Nations don't exist man. They're a mental construction.

Since when does ones parents count as "vague"? The statement you were replying to was saying that people being half-whatever should be considered, not that we should all count back 100,000,000 generations until we find we're whatever.
The nationality of your parents can easily have an affect on a person, irrespective of where you grow up.

As pretty much everything is a mental construct does that make the concept of nations any else relevant than all the other mental constructs?

So?
That doesn't make you "half-anything".
You can of course say "My parents were Irish". But to claim you are "half-Irish" is stupid. Does that mean your children are a quarter-Irish? And theirs an eigth-Irish?

Maybe you are half Welsh and half English if you are born on the Wales-England border.

It means that saying you performed a physical action in a mental construct is self-evidently idiotic. You wouldn't say you were born in the idea of strength.

You're ignoring my argument.
I was pointing out that the nationality of the parents (be it the same, or different) does have an effect on the child, albeit a comparatively small one (in most cases) to being present in the society in which they live. It is therefore meaningful to say that you're half Irish, or half French, because there will be a result upon you as a person from this heritage.
When you get to the following generation, however, these traits will be overwhelmed when passing characteristics on by the consequences of individual development as a response to society, so it would be fairly meaningless to say that one is 1/4 Irish or French, simply because the tendencies that arise from such a lineage will be insignificant compared to the effects of society, or random development.
