Crazyness
Shots fired at a helicopter evacuating people in New Orleans from the superdome...
what kind of idiotic moron would shoot at the people trying to save everyone.

Re: Crazyness
People go crazy in the immediate aftermath of anrchy.
the people who stayed their were either incapable of leaving or crazy.
those who voluntarily stayed were probably looters or psychos looking to prey on the weak and infirm, scavaging through the wreckage like parasites.

Re: Crazyness
most of the people left behind were poor. i believe new orleans is one of the poorest cities in america. they may have no transport to get them out of the city and the state was unable to offer much help. if i was stuck in new orleans and lost everything i had, i would be taking a trip down the shops right about now.

Re: Crazyness
I can understand looting to some extent, but shooting at a helicopter? Unbelievable. Now helicopters in our own country need door gunners.

Quote:
"We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in the water," and others dead in attics, The Associated Press quoted Nagin as saying. When asked how many, he reportedly said: "Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands."
...
Rescue workers continued to push bodies aside Wednesday as they used boats and helicopters to search for survivors. Their efforts have been hampered by lawlessness and damaged infrastructure.
...
Widespread looting of New Orleans businesses continued Wednesday, punctuated by the sounds of gunfire.
...
Some of the looting was taking place in front of police, with little response. Along Canal Street, the city's main thoroughfare, police allowed people to take shoes out of stores as long as the shoes fit.
At least seven hospitals in the city were evacuating patients and personnel because of flooding and a frightening breakdown in public order.
Doctors said two patients died Wednesday at Charity Hospital as a result of the lack of electricity and water.
The head of Acadian Ambulance Service, Richard Zuschlag, said his workers had been victimized by the mayhem sweeping the city as they worked to evacuate hospitals.

Quote:
In Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, a small town west of Biloxi, search and rescue crews put black marks on homes known to contain bodies because there weren't enough refrigerated trucks to remove the corpses.
...
The two major hospitals in New Orleans faced deteriorating conditions before evacuations got under way.
Tulane University Hospital employees carried patients to the roof of the hospital's parking garage because the elevators were not working, a spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile, "there's looting going on in the streets around the hospital," Karen Troyer Caraway said.
As floodwaters rose around Charity Hospital, the halls were dark and slippery, according to the AP.
Nurses hand-pumped ventilators for patients who couldn't breathe, and doctors brought supplies in by canoe from three nearby hospitals, the AP reported.
"It's like being in a Third World country," Mitch Handrich, a manager at Louisiana's biggest public hospital told the AP.
"We're trying to work without power. Everyone knows we're all in this together. We're just trying to stay alive."

Having nothing to do at work means that I read the news sites a lot. The Enby is saddened greatly by events of the past few days.

Re: Crazyness
Almost everything in those shops has no value now. Almost everything not looted will be trashed and written off as a loss. You cannot sell any textiles or foodstuffs after they have been through a flood. I would guess the same is probably true of electronics.
The shots were probably fired by a Syrian or Iranian terrorist. Since the United States can't seem to track down one individual, I guess it's about time to overthrow his government. Hmm.. is he Syrian or is he Iranian. Flip coin. Syrian is the winner.

With typical foresight and good luck. I have my vacation scheduled for next week in Birmingham, Alabama. Most of their electricity is still out. Hopefully, by next Wednesday when we fly in it will be up and running, all they had was wind and rain damage. At least the airport reopened right away.

You might want to consider changing your plans. Last year Birmingham lost its power for a week and I think it was not hit as bad as this time, but I have not followed the news from Birmingham this time. They apparently have a pretty lousy infrastructure.

Re: Crazyness
Is it just me or was the responce to the Tsunami a lot better, more organised and less chaotic?
Maybe it just seems that way as this is one major cluster-****.
Honestly, it seems agencies are fighting over who's responsibility it is for disaster recovery. You would expect troops to be sent in, in large numbers than the trickle that's there. But most are probably over getting shot at or blown up in Iraq/ Afganistan.
And the news footage show's nothing but black people left in the city, mainly as these were the poorest strata of socierty, with no way out and no-one gave two shits about them.
If you treat people with distain, don't supply enough food and water to them, then is it any wonder they've started to arm themselves and look out for #1.
Though I'm sure the roaving bands of armed rape gangs is having a lovely time. Shoot the ****ers. Reduce their numbers a little. They shot a National Guardsman at the superdome...why on earth did he or his company not shoot back?
The rule of law only exists if there are people to enforce it. You can't just leave people to do what they want, then bitch about them looting (of course, its only looting if they are black) to survive.
However I'm sure a 32" plasma TV will taste lovely fried up.
And in the midst of it all, Bush came on tv and was smirking and smiling his way through questions about his and his administrations mismanagment.
Thousands of people have died, many more in danger, no food, no water, murders, shootings and rapes...and he sits there smirking away saying "I can understand peoples wish that help was there yesterday...but, y'know, I can't imagine holding up a sign that says 'rescue me now', it's sad..."

point out the joke in what he said. there's a difference between 'joking' and 'laughing at a massive tragedy'. in july, the jokes were funny, the bombing wasnt.

tasteless i can do. but whereas 'an englishman gets on a bus. boom boom' is tasteless, 'Tis Gods way of keeping the numbers down' is xenophobic, unpleasant and highly offensive.
I don't think the forum would have too much time for someone who said the same thing about, for example, AIDS in Africa, or the tsunami. (For the latter there's the case study of Sunday, who got shot to shit over it. And also because he was a cockmunching pathetic little bastard in general, but also because of what he said that time)

Birmingham, Alabama is my wife's birthplace. I wanted to see it. It is also the southern end of the Appalachian mountains and supposed to be quite pretty in the surrounding area.
Also, Tuscolusa, Alabama is nearby. The University of Alabama is located there. The misus is a huge fan of American College Football. U of Alabama is her absolute favorite team. Have tickets to take her to a game while there. Winning big points on the marriage meter.

Am I understanding this correctly? That they're sending in police to prevent looting when people are dying, without food or water?
Did they make Nodrog head of the relief operation or something?

The only thing I've seen so far is buses and police officers patroling the streets.

The police/armed forces are the relief operation. It's just they don't tell anybody and threaten anyone who comes near them.

Re: Crazyness
oh, well, see what happens if you let the mob have guns.
and is it really that difficult to organize what to do after such an event?surely they must have had some kind of emergency plan. i mean its not like the whole country was in total chaos, its just a relativly small part.

Look at Iraq.
Is anyone surprised by the total ineptitude of this government to do anything well?
If it was possible to bomb Katina then it would have been fine, but that's about all they can do.
