Re: Abuse of the Prevention of Terrorism Act...
Of course it's disgusting, but it's not in the least surprising; conferences nowadays are stage-managed to the nth degree, and anything that even smacks of independence of thought, or a return to the 'bad old days' of the 80's - even a whiff of it - is rooted out. The way these thugs behaved is simply the logical conclusion of that type of thinking.
You will note that Fatty McCartney has only apologised for the way he was thrown out, not for him being thrown out.
The fact that the Terrorism Act eventually got involved just shows how bonkers the whole thing was.

So it's ok to happy slap OAP's so long as you apologise after.
I was more worried about the fact they used The prevention of Terrorism Act to stop him getting back in. Did he pose a safety threat? Did he have a ruck sack? Did he even have a beard? How else will they (mis)use these new laws? (And i'm not even a lefty.)

Of course he bloody well didn't. However, when you give some people a clip-on tie and a badge with their name on it, they start believing that they are Stalin or Pol Pot.

There were Prevention of Terrorism Acts passed between the seventies and eighties to deal with Northern Ireland and there is the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005.

Re: Abuse of the Prevention of Terrorism Act...
I feel the need to be the voice of reason in these heady days of sensationalism into which GD appears to be sinking...
Firstly.
What has been termed by many non-lawyers (no doubt the inaccuracy began with the Police Officer himself) a 'use of the powers under the Prevention of Terrorism Act' is simply a misnoma. The use of those words also makes the event sound more exciting than it is.
The gentleman was ejected from private property during a private event (you do not need a reason to ask someone to leave your living room for instance). As such the private individual (in this case the labour party) has the right to use reasonable force to evict the person that they want to leave. The police are there to help any private citizen effect this eviction.
Having been evicted the gentleman tried to get back in.
At this point he was stopped by the police. The police are supposed to stop anyone in these circumstances and of course they were conveniently on hand this time.
Now these powers which I describe are powers at common law. They have been around for centuries.
Now what do we know that the officer did? Well we know that the officer stoped the gentleman re-entering and then confiscated his pass.
None of this is surprising. None of this is new to English Law.
But what else did the officer do? In that charmingly stupid way, in which only a police officer can truly respond, he also must have blurted out "I'm arresting you under the Prevention of Terrorism Act".
Now clearly the officer wasn't because:
a) he couldn't
b) the gentleman in question was not wizzed off to paddington green police station to be questioned.
But clearly the officer did not know this.
But what is equally clear is that no journalist reporting the story is aware of this either.
Journalists, I am sure, quite love the idea that the Prevention of Terrorism Act is some all powerful demonic police state which has been let loose designed to terrorise innocent grannies and steal children's sweets while helping paedophiles. But sadly this is just not the case.
Secondly
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4292342.stm
If you wish to feel smug and self satisfied may i point out that former home secretary Jack Straw doesn't appear any more knowledgable about the contents of anti-terrorism legislation ...

Re: Abuse of the Prevention of Terrorism Act...
It's in every paper* and on all the news things. I saw the same clips about 5 times yesterday while leaving the TV on in the background. Everyone is using it to lob rocks at labour.
I love the security guard though "good cake, very good cake", or whatever he said. What a stupid thing to say.
"Why were you so rude and physical dragging an 82 year old man out of a conference earlier today?"
"Can't you see this cake is far more important than that sort of question?"
And then everyone got upset and all the labour people are like "huge mistake, stupid security guards... cake obsessed..."
They had a security guard sitting next to Cherie's sister after she said "what if I ask about Iraq while Tony is making his speach".
Unfortunately, the Conservatives still can't find someone to lead them, and the lib dems still aren't taken seriously, so no one will do anything until Blair retires. Whichever century that will be.
[/mini rant].
*well, at least the Daily Mail. I blame my parents

It would have been that easy, if he wasnt a member of the Labour party himself.

It's their event, he is a member of this organisation and thus abides by the organisation's rules.
So he got ejected.
If anything, the fact that a party treats their own members like this is a pretty big sign as to why people shouldn't vote for them.

I must admit that my parties have no experience in putting thugs on dissidents within the party.

To hell with Yahwe. More sensationalism. More drama. Damn the facts and reason. Where is the entertainment value in that?
82-year old trouble makers should be dealt with and dealt with now!

I don't think people are really that concerned about the legal merits of it, but are rather more concerned with the moral justification.
But I could be wrong.

Re: Abuse of the Prevention of Terrorism Act...
To be honest, anyone who is a member of the Labour Party deserves to be beaten by thugs.
I mean, wtf is he doing as a member of a party which is clearly out of touch with his views?

people seemed to be concerned about a particular piece of legislation
but i could have been wrong myself.
If it was just a show of hands about whether it is wrong to man handle the elderly then i would generally say it is. as long as theelderly person isn't trying to stab your baby of somesuch.
