Ban Top Gear
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4432279.stm
I especially enjoyed the
Quote:
Transport 2000 pressure group...has called for it to be taken off the air and replaced with a show that promotes "sensible driving in sensible vehicles"
|
3-point turn challenge anyone? Or maybe we can watch people driving clapped out Mondeos to and from work Big Brother style?
I also enjoyed how they blame the show for the current Rover crisis.
Nothing at all to do with the fact that every rover for the past 10 years has been about as exciting as the prospect of a Mo Mowlam - Ann Widdecombe lesbian romp and about as reliable as a Labour pre-election promise then?
Top Gear is a bit of sanity in the sea of innane dribble that is Sunday evening viewing.

A few months earlier the BBC was forced to apologise after the programme's team tested the durability of a truck by ramming it into a 30-year-old chestnut tree, infuriating locals in the Somerset village of Churchill.

Lets ban anything that drives fast. Or thats dangerous. And lets put Pillows everywhere in case we fall down.
THE NANNY STATE CAN JUST **** RIGHT OFF, AND TRANSPORT 2000 CAN LICK MY BUMCUPS!

Thats absoloutely fine when you live in a country where a loose paving stone is considered Mount Everest , but we have actual hills in this country Hans.

Re: Ban Top Gear
Banning something is different from asking the BBC to scrap it, but I agree this criticism does seem a bit stupid (if only because it's the exact thing people like Clarkson will lap up [pun unintended ]).

Re: Ban Top Gear
It's class. Fifth Gear doesn't come close to comparing to the humour and entertainment and even that's only for half-hour.
If people needed to learn how to drive responsibily and sensibly, doesn't that constitute the theory test required to drive?!

Re: Ban Top Gear
Top gear is one of the few programs left that I actually follow and look forward to.
So they occasionally do the odd silly thing, big deal. I'm sure groups like Transport 2000 do more ecological damage in terms of wasted paper with thier feeble protests than Clarkson did driving that range rover up the hill (something which, I might add, broke no law or anything like that) - I'm with JJ in wishing they'd just **** off and die.
In fact, I'm off to their website in the hope they have a feedback form.

I think Top Gear is boring, Jeremy Clarkson is one of the most annoying people on TV, and I don't like cars.

Its a crappy car show, period. I wouldn't mind if it dissapeared forever, but i dont support motions to enforce this. Though theres no real denying it does encourage the pathetic boy racer generation we seem to consider remotely acceptable.

Re: Ban Top Gear
Emailed to various addresses at Transport 2000.
Let the baiting begin:
Quote:
I am intrigued by your suggestion for a new program, Third Gear, to air on the BBC in place of Top Gear. If you could supply me with the following information, that would be great:
- Who is your target demographic?
- Do you have an example layout/storyboard for this show, lasting at least 30 minutes (preferably 60)? Inclusion of the details for interest pieces etc would be great.
- What percentage of ratings penetration do you realistically expect such a show to achieve?
- In the spirit of free speech and fair debate, would it not be preferable for both Top Gear and Third Gear to run, rather than excluding one in favour of the other? This would allow the more popular of the two shows to succeed, giving Third Gear an equal chance.
I look forward to hearing your opinions with interest.
Thanks.

Re: Ban Top Gear
It's a it of escapism simple as that. People doing things in cars you couldn't normally do in cars most people can't afford. I drive but have no interest or knowledge of cars, but I do enjoy watching the show although it is generally more for the stupid challenges and the like.
the idea of scrapping it is stupid. If I suggested scrapping Eastenders for some show that promotes some level of normality and reality then that show would flop instantly, because it would be so boring. People watch show like these to get away from reality, not to learn how to live (I hope).

They tend to laugh at people that do up their Nova's with spoilers etc so I cant see how they are promoting boy racers, unless by boy racer you just mean anyone that has an interest in cars. I've never seen them do a challenge where they have to fit a Nova with a big fat exhaust, spoiler, blacked out windows, mega sound system, body kit, alloy wheels, turbo, undercar neon lights and go fast stripes for as cheap as possible.

Yes I was a bit confused by that logic too.
I find gardening shows boring; that doesn't mean I think they should be scrapped (for one thing they keep my parents entertained and out of the way).

Re: Ban Top Gear
tbh id love them to do a show that is a 'spoof' of what "Third Gear" would be like...
And coming up after the break :
The Stig drives a Daewoo Matiz round our track never exceeding 50!
We take 4 brand new Ford Fiestas and Parallel park in spaces wide enough for a tank
AND
We see just how slowely you can go whilst travelling down country roads with the added bonus of reporting anyone who passes us to the police..
DONT MISS IT!

Re: Ban Top Gear
I never saw the point in taking an obsessive interest in cars like most men seem to do. Cars are just machines with bright paint work. Top Gear is a show about these machines hosted by someone, who, with the best will in the world, is a bt of an arse.
It does seem curious that they wish to ban it, though. I never knew Top Gear was that influential in determining people's driving habits.

I dont think it is to be honest, just bloody environmentalists have nothign decent to say as usual so try and use top gear as a scapegoat, lets face it we would all love to drive at 150mph but this is far from possible on the M6 at 5:30pm on a friday.

Re: Ban Top Gear
Top Gear have to rent out a racetrack, country park or go abroad in order to be able to actually test their cars. I'm also pretty sure most people recognise their volvo will never provide the same thrill as driving a porsche at breakneck speeds.
Top Gear is a pretty good advert for days out at Silverstone though. I'm almost tempted to learn to drive.

Re: Ban Top Gear
That they **** up trees and hills is bad, and they should not do it.
Personally, I think the show is pretty boring, but that's probably beacause I don't really like cars that much. I would not really be sad or angry if it was put of the air, but banning things like this is pretty bad. And those 2000 people sounded crazy.

Top Gear, car obsession or not, great entertainment simply because it does totally ridiculous things.
