omgaliens
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2006..._Briefing.html
They are announcing a "significant find on mars" at 13:00 EST (18:00 GMT if I've done my maths right). There's already a lot of speculation that it involves the discovery of flowing water.
Should be an interesting one.

I hope it's another face, but on this one 'they' made a bit more of an effort and shaped it like Terry Wogan or Des Lynam.

Re: omgaliens
Noone would have believed in the last years of the 19th century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. Noone could have dreamed that we were being scrutinised, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets. And yet across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely they drew their plans against us.

Get ready to be excited horn, wait for it, they have pictures which show water may have run down the side of a gully but it also may be a few other things but a few people at NASA think it may be water. This space exploration lark is sure exhilarating.
What do you think the chances are of us ever seeing anything really interesting with regards to space in our life time ? I mean it's going to take a decade for us to go back to the moon where we've already been before. The "big" announcements in the early days of space exploration are going to be things like "water may have flowed here" and "planet x is 3 degrees hotter than we thought". Hardly riveting stuff unless you have a huge interest in that sort of thing but feel free to keep going with your fantasies about how exciting space is and gorgeous green skinned women who you can romance because I doubt they'll be happening any time soon.

Re: omgaliens
Yea the X Files was a pretty good show but I thought it got silly when Mulder left and some weird guy replaced him.
Discuss.
Believing that aliens are watching us and the government is covering it without any real evidence must require a similar leap of faith to those who believe in creationism without any real evidence. That's not to say that I'm sceptical that life exists elsewhere. If the universe is as big as claimed then the chances of another planet similar to our own where life can develop seem quite high but I reckon the inhabitants of said planet would have a lot more interesting things to do than hang out watching planet Earth and communicating with the governments to form a big conspiracy.
Current space exploration seems to me to be fairly boring, the majority of discoveries are things like evidence of running water or funny shaped rocks oh and space shuttles blowing up. The chances of anything exciting occurring in our life time (with the exception of some kind of outside event) seem quite slim, I guess as a rough timetable we'll be back to the moon by the middle of the next decade and then Mars in maybe 30 or 40 years ? We've been born a few generations too early to see the real exciting stuff that will occur in space exploration. Do you have any real points to discuss or are you just going to reply with sarcasm as if it proves something.

Re: omgaliens
If this thread turns into an X-Files discussion I'm turning off the internet.
"NASA photographs have revealed bright new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars that suggest water carried sediment through them sometime during the past seven years."
So as soon as we evolve the ability to only need water every seven years we'll be sunbathing on the beaches of Mars. Richard Branson must be over-the-moon.

Re: omgaliens
The real excitement from space comes from how we will exploit it. I have heard that huge asteroids are made mostly of nickel and other semi-precious metals. Just imagine how rich we could be from mining those materials. I wonder if there is oil under the martian soil or even better gold and platinum.
The greed potential is where space exploration is headed. People are already trying to develop space elevators to carry goods back and forth from earth to space.

You're forgetting that the more abundant such exotic materials become, the lower their price.
Supply and demand.
Also, its one thing to go into space - its another to tow back an asteroid and somehow land it *safely* , in order to use its resources.

By the time we get to position to mine Mars I imagine we'd have long stopped using oil as a fuel source. There may be minerals and metals that aren't available on Earth which will be more

I didn't realize that making money was part of the grand schema, considering that 'the love of money is the root of all evil', and 'lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and dust corrode'.

If this action prompts hostilities between earth and the martians, I'd advise those in the Woking area to move out.

Nothing wrong with making the money and doing something good with it. It really depends what your motives are.
Don't feel guilty about making an honest profit. That's how business is done. Just don't let profit lead you toward cheating people or cutting corners.
