Can we reduce the number of ships and add flagships?
Hi
Is there a good reason why we have so many ships in the game? Seems to me there are a lot of pointless digits. Sometimes u have to stop and count the digits in order to find out how many ships there really are in a fleet.
Can't we just increase ship cost by a factor of say, 100? I find ships become more personal and easier to handle when there are fewer of them.
I also have a further suggestion to add character to fleets/ships:
How about introducing a flagship at the heart of each fleet? This ship functions as the command center for the fleet. U can only have as many fleets as u have flagships (only one flagship per fleet). Flagships can be destroyed, reducing the number of fleets available to u, but new ones can be built in heavy factories.
The flagship is the largest ship in the fleet because it carries the wormhole/gate generators, so a fleet that loses it's flagship during a mission can only return to their homeplanet using their unmodified travel speed (no bonuses for spacetravel tech). A flagship should be appropriately armed and armored, it should be the equivelant of several battleships and could be targeted as tertiary targets by certain shiptypes.
After surviving a certain number of missions flagships receive upgrade bonuses to reflect veteran crews and other modifications (improved armor, firepower, emp resistance, lower initiative score, additional target class, etc.).
The flagships can be named and those names will then act as their fleet names.
It's important flagships don't become so powerful that they have a significant impact on the battles, it's function is just to add a little flare and personality to your fleets.

Flagships have been suggested before, and will probably be suggested again, not a bad concept but too difficult to add to the existing game engine.
The number of ships in the game was increased in r21 by a factor of 10. This was done when the round length was decreased from 10 weeks to 7 weeks. I was doing the stats at the time and figured people would like the increased ship counts. There was some complaining at the time, but mostly people liked it so it's stayed. If we want to decrease ship counts then it is simple enough to raise the costs of ships by a factor of ten again, personally I don't really care.

I do think that the bigger ships need to cost more, people used to fear 100 BS, mainly because they did a lot of damage (100 guns per BS).
I still believe that a bigger gap in quantities between FI -> BS is needed, but not on the scale of "Thats no moon, thats a deathstar" i.e. no superweapons.
Current ratio from FI -> BS is 8->1.
new ratio should be...
FI - 32
CO - 16
FR - 8
DE - 4
CR - 2
BS - 1
With higher hulls having lower quantity they have to be increased in power/armor.

That's because with the current inflation in ships, a hundred DE aren't worth shit. Once 100 DE can take out half your fleet u'll learn to fear them too.
Besides how realistic is a planet producing and maintaining millions of ships. Just think about how many Carriers or other warships are cruising the oceans today. Building a spacebattleship would likely be as costly for an advanced civilization as building a carrier is for us.
I do agree with Mr Lobster's ship ratio's though.

the old round 1/2 stats though not having actual flagships (if i remember correctly, it was a very long time ago), did require lighter class ships to escort them in because they were heavily armoured, but with such a low init they took forever to fire.

I like the idea of having a flagship as a fleet slot, would mean that the potential for planets to have more fleets flying (say 8 flagships = 8 fleets). Obviously would require the cost of a flagship to be so high that having more than a few flagships is un realistic.
Would also make for fun battles as the fleet supportting a flagship would need to be big enough that they don't lose the flagship. Defending forces to have flagships? only 1 required on the battle field for defence coordination could mean that as long as 1 is there ten planets could send defence to try and take down the 1 attacking flagship.
Just my 2p worth
