Watched it every year as a kid with my Uncle, who had biked all over europe back when countries were more open in a sense :P (i.e. easier to do work for money in hand that wasn't a rip-off pittance)
p.s. Started watching in the Delgado years... alas all my favourite cyclist have either retired or offed themselves (rip Pantini)

i remember years and years ago, the Tour de France rode straight through my villege, and most of hampshire i think

Nah, for once Demon Dave is right, or at least I'm 99% sure he is.
One year, not too long ago, for some bizarre reason it came over to the UK, I'll see if I can find something about it.
Edit: here - seems it was to do with the Channel Tunnel and was in 1994.
