Whats the definition of emo?
atm im really not sure
someone last night said it was "punk with lyrics" but its kind of a bit "soft" for punk... so atm im stuck on "soft punk with lyrics".
if someone else could have a wonderful flash of inspiration, or just knowledge, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's quality, not quantity. We need karma here, I tell you (if you make some kind of Radiohead 'Karma Police' reference, you're officially gay).
As to the original question :
http://altmusic.about.com/library/weekly/aabyb_emo.htm
Quote:
The short and simple answer is that Emo is Hardcore Punk music with sensitive and emotional lyrics. The music is epitomized by post-Grunge, edgy rock with explosive energy mixed with sensitivity. Emotional lyrics about sadness, love and even anger are common lyrical themes. There is also a subculture of young people that are considered Emo. The casual Emo garb is faded blue jeans or slightly oversized work pants accompanied by a secondhand T-shirt with an out of place logo, bad Heavy Metal tees work well too.

Emo kids are kids who slit their wrists and cry about relationships and act like they are depressed over everything.

I'd imagine a good 80% of these forums are "emo" by that clothing definition. I'm sure there's a few stylish people among us though.

The definition of Emo is to talk REALLY slowly in a comedy manner, appear on lots of dodgy american TV shows and films, and sound just a little bit "Slow".
We are talking about the same Emo , arent we?

Hell is for Heroes wouldn't come under "emo" really, they'd fit better into the "****e" catergory.

I heard a good song by them.
Can't remember what it's called.
Still "strokes" and "folks".

Re: Whats the definition of emo?
emo is supposed to be a off set of punk introduced in 86 in D.C
it doesn't have to be be hardcore at all ie: okgo & weezer both ot these are emo
emo kids are often straight edge meaning they don't do drugs or drink...
they often wear geeky clothing.
the music itself is mainly getting dumped & rubbish like that & please don't compare it to hardcore punk as it isn't anything quite like it

So it's like punk, only without channeling all emotions into anger?

punk doesnt equal anger, punk is (well was) about expressing yourself how you saw fit. Because it started in the slums of England and to some extent New York, a lot of punk was singing about oppression, similair to rap. Then a lot of punk went more political, and a lot of it went teen angst. Teen Angst is currently cool (lo good charlotte), and having real problems, such as war and no health care arent.
Emo is an offshoot of punk apparently, and a lot of bands could come under the same banner, such as Jawbreaker. Now because punk is so elitist anyone within the scene who shows emotion is an "emo twat".
This sums up the level of intelligence held by the average mall/teen punk of today.
Forget labelling bands/music, it's a waste of time. Go by a Dead Kennedys album instead. Oh and as Johnny Jotten said.
"The punks ruined punk"
