The Top 10 "Worst Historical Britons" ever
An odd selection, and one of GD's favourite discussion points taking the 20th Century award. Your thoughts gentlemen?
- 1900 to 2000: Oswald Mosley
(1896-1980)
- 1800 to 1900: Jack the Ripper
- 1700 to 1800: Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765)
- 1600 to 1700: Titus Oates
(1649-1705)
- 1500 to 1600: Sir Richard Rich (Lord Rich of Leighs)
(1496/7-1567)
- 1400 to 1500: Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
- 1300 to 1400: Hugh Despenser (The Younger)
(died 1326)
- 1200 to 1300: King John
(1167-1216)
- 1100 to 1200: Thomas Becket
Archbishop of Canterbury
(c.1120-1170)
- 1000 to 1100: Eadric Streona
(died 1017)
How the list was compiled

Re: The Top 10 "Worst Historical Britons" ever
"Worst" lists even more than "best" lists seem to be fairly difficult/pointless to compile. I mean, for all of Mosley's rhetoric, what long lasting impact did he actually have? The BBC says he was "an inspiration for far-right groups in the UK". And they've done what exactly?
Similarly, I'd probably nominate Thatcher for the 20th Century one but I am under no illusions that clearly she was a better (/more moral) person than, say, Ian Brady.
Most of the people on the list seem to just people people who are historically unpopular for one reason or another.

Re: The Top 10 "Worst Historical Britons" ever
"So who was the worst Briton of the 20th century?"
"Adolf Hitler!!!!"
"He was naughty but I'm not sure we can include him as a Briton"
"Umm ok... how about Oswald Mosley?"
I'd go for Winston Churchill.

Personally, im thinking theres Harold Shipman missing somewhere in there.
And from a purely scottish perspective , Thomas Hamilton for his actions at Dunblane as theres not much more evil than a massacre of unarmed children.

Thatcher should be on that list for not being historical enough yet.

Re: The Top 10 "Worst Historical Britons" ever
I only know Jack the Ripper I think, unless King John is the one from Robin Hood!
They're both evil, one took lives. Other one took money (and lives?)...
