Am I Obscure
note: a while back the story in the news was that the mars rover got stuck in a rut
so my little brother has a comic strip in a college newspaper, and it's all right as that goes.
but that's not that point. the point is i've only sent him one idea for a comic, and it was as follows:
Character is watching news. Guy on news is saying:
"According to NASA, the Mars rover has gotten stuck in a rut. And in a completely unrelated story, pop star Michael Jackson has been walking into a wall for 87 hours straight at this point..."
Pretty simple I thought. My brother said "I don't get it" though, and he has a pretty strange sense of humor himself, so I get to be worried.
A "That's not very funny" I can understand.
A "Michael Jackson is waaay overdone" is probably true.
But an "I don't get it"
was pretty unexpected.
Am I that obscure?

Re: Am I Obscure
I had no idea either there's an obvious missing link in that joke, like: "speaking of artificial things that aren't equppied enough to cope, michael jackson has ...." etc

Re: Am I Obscure
Tell your brother he makes a very cool cartoon, and he should keep it up.
Also, the joke is probably a bit obscure, but it's a decent joke, I think - but I guess it best works in a cartoon, not when you tell/write it like that.
EDIT: "completely unrelated story" is no good, as it obviously is connected

Re: Am I Obscure
I don't get it. Why would they possibly be linked?

Whenever i think of Michael Jackson, I think of that horrible movie, where he turns into a car, into a gigantic metal man (IIRC, very long time since I saw that movie) and sometthing else - all somewhat mechanic. Then you have the fact he's mostly manifactured now, which sorta all leads to the connection to machines - atleast for me.

If you're not a Michael Jackson fan you won't like this movie.

Re: Am I Obscure
That guy to the right in your brothers comic, he must be the most generic cartoon character in the world. I can't say how many kids seem to doodle a long haired well built bloke that looks exactly like that. Only today I found an abandoned school book with an almost identical picture scribbled in the back.
The best I can figure, he looks like a typical anime character, and I'm sure I've seen him in some japanese cartoon or other.
