Ok , so WinXP is completely ****ed, again, as usual.
Anyone know why it is that whenever i reset, WinXP boots up with a COMPLETELY ****ING RANDOM DATE on the calendar. Ive tried synchronising with time.windows.com , to no effect. So i turned that off, and lo and behold ... exactly the same problem. It appears to set the date in reverse (today is 05.08.04 , but according to the system clock , its 08.05.04).
Oh, and every 30-60 seconds , my net connection "Spikes" , kills anything im connected to (messengers , IRC , games) and reconnects. Its doing my ****ing head in!

Checked with your ISP? Checked to make sure you don't have any ports open which your firewall have left open stupidly? Made sure it's even working?! Made sure you've stayed off midget porn?

it's probably not this either... but even with UK set, the date can still be customized to be the wrong way round

Does your BIOS show the correct time before you boot into Windows?

Having checked, youre correct , the bios date is wrong. However, having changed it and rebooted, its still telling me that today is the 8th June.

Re: Ok , so WinXP is completely ****ed, again, as usual.
Just to make sure: You have done a virus scan with updated definitions, and checked for some dodgy spyware, right?
Maybe it's some app's "cool feature" to upgrade the time from internet or elsewhere (maybe even a spyware-logging don't-change-my-system-time thing).
To find out if it's really your BIOS, you should boot to another OS a couple of times. Either Knoppix from disk, or good ol DOS bootdisk or Windows PE or whatever.
If it still happens it's for sure your BIOS. But actually, it sounds too strange to be true...

27 windows updates (6 of them critical) later, and a BIOS flash, and its all working wonderfully.

I don't install Updates most of the time. They slow the thing down, 99% o fthem are for 'Security' issues that I'm protected from anyway, so why bother?

I think you will die! Not because of your oldness (well...), but because of your missing windows updates.
The times of "hey, look at meh, I'm cool, I don't need no patches" are over...
It's a security concept, you know... I mean, ok, so you got a firewall and virus scanner -- but the security holes are still there, waiting for a bug in IE / Mozilla / Opera to be exploitet. Multiple protection, ai?
Windows Updates are a great way to harden a system, and the benefits weigh out the effort needed to install by far (pfff, just keep it running once, 1 reboot, done!).

Spikes are probably due to the recent storms in the UK.
As for the calender, have you tried going into the calender settings and chamging it from there? If that dosent work, you can try the registry (but i havent a clue about where to go, and i suggest you contact someone who has more brains than I before you go into the reg)

its working now. Its working just fine.
And the comments on storm , thats probably very accurate indeed, as its a Wireless LAN i connect over, and we had severe thunderstorms here the last couple of days.
