I'm in a bit of a spot
I've organised a work night out (at the end of the month). I gave everybody plenty of notice. I set a deadline then booked the resteraunt. After the deadline (12 days ago) i got people coming forward asking me if it was OK if they came too. I told them it should be OK (but i did nothing about it at the time).
So today, without the majority of people paying, i went in and used my money to pay the deposit. I also asked about extra seats.
No seats. None. Zero. Zip. As such the meal is oversubscribed by 4 (24 seats have been booked).
What in the **** do i do? I'm currently taking the Ostrich approach and hoping people will drop out.
Anyways ... ideas?

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Any couples going? They could sit on each other's knees!
Or...
Hide under the table?
Or...
Just tell the extra 4 to f**k off?

Send an email out saying that it's the restaurants fault - they oversubscribed themselves and will pay back deposits for anyone who drops out - are there any volunteers.

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Or just turn up at the restaurant and say you'd been told it was ok and make a fuss. They'll have spare seats and tables.
(maybe)

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
If Ste's suggestion doesn't work then just turn up and hope for the best. People often drop out at the last minute and the restaurant can always get a couple of extra chairs if the worst come to the worst.

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Tom/Dante ... I've already mentioned to a couple of folk that there's not spare seats (hence i can't really blame the resteraunt). When i went to book the extra spots i saw the computer with the seating plan and it was chock full. The guy also said there was no extra space (and looking at the tables i can understand why).
Ste ... might be an idea. It makes me look like a dick though (i.e. can't organise a piss up). Still ...

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Ring the restaurant and say that you're going to have to cancel the reservation unless they can find 4 spare chairs. Say people don't mind squeezing up but you really don't have a choice etc etc etc
Edit: Didn't realise you'd put a deposit down (I don't think I've ever had to pay a deposit to book at a restaurant? It isn't normal is it?

Say the restaurant double booked your party with another one and give everyone money back then go out on a huge piss up

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Just ask if four people wanna be so kind to make room voluntarily
because you didn't expect their would be such a huge turn up
and the restaurant seems to be unable to cope with such numbers
No big deal
"Our plan for a night out seems to be a bigger success then we could have anticipated"
I would try Tomkats idea first tho

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Just make the whole booking at another restaurant then cancel your original reservation

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Tell the 4 people who were most late that there are no seats left, and that in future they should pay on time if they wish to attend. I'm really not sure what the problem/issue is here.

Unless the deposit is fully refundable, this is probably a bad idea and you shouldnt do it in future.

Re: I'm in a bit of a spot
Twenty go in and four stay outside.
Twenty inside are obnoxious and threating to the point that a nearby table for four leaves restaurant in a huff. You pull their table and chairs over to yours and the four outside come on in.
Watch (rewatch) Blues Brothers for example of obnoxious behavior to nearby diners.

Spike the tea/coffee of the four colleagues you like the least with a laxative beforehand. Sitcom solution to a sitcom problem, virtually guaranteed not to backfire.
