WW1 and fire

Hey peeps

Yesterday i was watching Legends of the Fall with my girl and i was wondering about the trench stalemate situation. Why didnt they use more flammable stuff? wouldnt it be easier to throw flaming barrels of oil at the other guy`s trench to `smoke them out` like bush would say? i also heard they used a lot of underground caves, all they better, it would suck them out of O2.

any thoughts on that?

Re: WW1 and fire

because they were too busy trying to supply their vehicles with oil to instead throw barrels of it into the other teams trench. the logistics involved with trying to breed oil barrel throwing ubermensch was also proving a bit of a problem.

I meant shit like petroleum, just that black stuff that come out of a hole in the groud, not expensive diesel oil or gasoline. I assume it was very easy, specially for the gemans and ottomans to take it by the tons if they wanted, amirite?

if not, Why not phosphorus?

Re: WW1 and fire

i'm pretty sure they did use them. it's just that you have to be pretty close to use them.

Re: WW1 and fire

fair enough, what you said made sense. Now, how come people did not use gas in WW2. Im pretty sure they could come up with better stuff to murder civilians than fire (as seen on dresden and tokyo)
Besides that, sieges like Stalingrad would be a lot shorter and easier on the germans if they used gases against the poorly trained and poorly equiped russian military. What happened?

The use of chemical agents had been technically outlawed by the 1925 Geneva convention, although not all the belligerents had ratified the treaty and some nations ratified the treaty with reservations (which mostly amounted to no-first-use policies). However, virtually all of the belligerents had large stockpiles of chemical agents so it was understood that had anyone used such agents against military or civilian targets they could expect retaliation in kind.

The Germans actually had a huge lead in the development and production of nerve agents (primarily tabun and sarin) which were far more deadly than the chemical agents everyone else had. The allies were blissfully unaware of this until late in the war and the Germans mistakenly assumed the allies had them also since the patents had been published when they had been first developed in the 1930s (as pesticides).

How come they used zycklon to kill jews then?

When it comes to 'rules for war' i dont see how it could work, as the standart practice for the country that loses is having all of its executive leaders terminated. It leads to an "everything goes" instance, out of fear of death...

I believe that if there were A-Bombs in 1925, they would be outlawed too, am I right?

How is being gased worse than being incinerated?
