Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
It's a bit silly tbh. Netgamers is pretty stable these days, and I'm fairly sure the effort that'd need to be put into setting up and maintaining a private irc server is simply not worth the effort. Besides, alliances these days don't last more than 2 rounds.

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
Was 1up one of the first that started using Netgamers.
What I mean by this is that some alliances have used netgamers, but I am talking about top alliances. In this category was 1up the first?
I used to hate private alliance servers, they were pointless at best.

i think HR did a few rounds back. got invited there by some old gal mates to help sort some bp members. not quite sure if it was used as a hangout or as a staging area though.

I think after the whole Xtothez incident many alliances were less trusting of using private irc. That still in top 10 pa moments heh

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
The entire TFD community (all three of us left ;-) ) still used the private server, even without playing PA, so it was logical for us to setup our channels there too. It wouldn't be worth the effort to set one up, but we were using it already anyways.

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
1up popularised the trend for using NetGamers, though I imagine they took inspiration from someone else. The reason this became popular was that it was quickly apparent that activity in the alliance private channel was much higher when that private channel was on NetGamers. People talk more if they only have one IRC client open, and even if their IRC client supports multiple servers it's still generally easier to manage a single server connection. With a private server, people sometimes log off from the private server but continue chatting on NetGamers (or whatever their main IRC network is), depriving the alliance private channel of activity.
These days, with the lower alliance limit, running a private server seems almost pointless - if there are only 30 people online, do you really need a whole IRC server for that?

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
For those who use a private server - why do you? Is it worth the effort taken to run another one, and isn't it just a hassle having two servers open (even on one IRC client)?

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
ROCK used it because it gave us more control over access, rather than just op/voice we had all sorts of random signs, one for HC, one for commanders, BCs, DCs etc..
As far as effort - pass, it was run by a long-standing member of our community who didnt actually play the game.
Hassle yes.
Only really need your own network now if your alliance plays many games or you have some kinda uber nickserv thats linked in with your website or something...

It's a one-time effort to create a decent perform, that's all. I use treeview, a mircscript that creates a tree of my servers (3) and channels (25 ish) on the left of my screen, works quite well.
ATM our server has 15ish channels with more than 3 people in a channel (maybe a few secret which I can't see/know off, I'm no oper), supports a handfull of games, has 50 ppl online and quite a few regged nicks.
Some of those games have ircservers of their own anyways, so it's either spreading TFD over multiple ircservers without them getting contact with each other, or be a real community with everyone on 1 server. We chose the latter.

I'm sure some of the old-timers can remember having emergency 'backup' channels on NG for the inevitable occasions when the private server simply stopped working.

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
netsplits on ng are only a problems when P splits. Cos then u need some active bugger to be inviting everyone to your private channels, everyones favourite job.
WP used a priv server r21 mainly for old times sake and cos Darky had left it running for the past 7 rounds for no real reason. It offers a much higher level of security and freedom over channel creation and management. Rather than having to wait for cservice to reg it. Personally i see no problem with running two servers on one mirc client, no different to having lots of channels on one server.

1- More secure. You can decide exactly what you run, what modes, and have full control to throw people off, the services and so on.
2- No netsplits (it used to be bad) , and if something goes wrong, you are in control, not some entity which is not part of your alliance.
3- For that matter it removes the need to be on netgamers at all, except when your cluster alliance is on there (/fakenicks). So in most cases 1 mirc connection is enough.
3- No P. I repeat, no P. And that alone should be reason enough.
Currently I have 8 different networks open on my irc client, imo, since they integrated the multiple serverwindows inside mirc it hasn't been a hassle.
One important rule for private ircs though, you must have full control/ownership over the machine it runs on. If you don't (ie a ' friend' or ' member' or anyone else you can't trust 10000%) it's not worth it.

Agreed its great to see some oldschool legion guys again, I also enjoy playing PA with some oldschool ToT guys.
But Im very sure, most of this oldschool wanker allys were better organised, had a much more skilled command and a larger memberbase than the current PA topalliances. ^^
Anyway it doesnt matter. We wont use the NG for private channels, we have a private IRC server for 6 years now, no reason to change it.

I remember going to priv servers b/c of netsplits and control over spies.
But that was 7 years ago so who knows...

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
After seing something that looks like cservice giving out sensitive information, i come to the conclusion that private servers is still the only guarantee you have. After recent events i have a growing paranoia again. Anything external has uncontrolable weaknesses, and anyone wanting 100% control of their own information has to run everything themself. Still sad, still true.

The only thing that is "still true" is that you will not have 100% control of your own information, never, at no point, with private server or without.

Alki actually makes a good point, if you go to the trouble of reading between the lines.

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
we had an issue with server hijack and ddos last round (not pa related) and had to use netgamers for 2 weeks, every member was relieved to go home to the private server.
people talked less, the chat was more reserved, the atmosphere was less relaxed !
cant explain why.. it just feels like home !

Re: Do alliances today use private irc servers?
Although FAnG did use a private server for a couple of rounds I think they switched to netgamers before 1up started playing. I think this was as much to do with lack of a techie to run a priv server than anything else though.
It does make you pay more attention to irc if you're only on one server though.
