Who here remembers playing Elite?

If you do, try the demo of Darkstar One. Look in the latest news section for the download links.

It amounts to the sequal to Elite that never happened. There is a story but you don't have to follow it if you don't want to. You can smuggle, pirate, run escort missions, trade, etc etc. All pretty cool. Thankfully you don't have to dock with annoying rotating space stations this time, they stay flat.

Full thing is out in august apparently.

downloading the demo now, 899MB takes quite a bit, but Elite was always fun, even back in my old C64-Days

Re: Who here remembers playing Elite?

Oh right. I think that version is in german (audio + text) though. There are certainly two different versions of the demo. I never really liked the X games as they seemed to require huge resources and were stupidly complicated control-wise. This I could get quite into though.

Pfft, they were easy. You either matched your rotation (straightforward if you didn't have the auto-center on) or got close to it, waited for it to be at a similar alignment to you and bursted forward.

I feel I should point out that I wasn't playing on the amiga or those strange RiscOS acorn thingies. No no, I was playing on an Amstrad CPC 464.

Which took 15 minutes to load the game off tape.

Which ran at a mighty 3Mhz.

Which meant the game ran at an equally impressive 3 frames per second, and vector graphics only so no solid objects.

These factors made for numerous frustrations. Firstly, it was often hard to tell which side of the space station was the front and which was the back, as you could see straight through it (it's only lines, remember) so you could see the "letterbox" from either side. This lead to many annoying attempts to dock with the back of the spacestation, with hilarious results.
Next, you'd be amazed how hard combat is at 3 frames per second.
Finally, saving was a nightmare, as not only did you have to try not to record over any of your previous games on the tape, it was then pretty much a matter of luck as to whether you could find it again when you wanted to load it.

Ahh, old computers.

I was absolutely rubbish at doing the spacestation docking (I was only 5-8 when I played Elite) but my dad was awesome at it, so I just got him to do it for me until I could afford an auto-docking thingy

Re: Who here remembers playing Elite?

ok, I've played 15-20% of the full version now and it does indeed become very boring: trade, fly around, shoot down pirates, fly around some more, collect artefacts, shoot down more pirates, fly around, etc.
Sure, the opponents become better and you can upgrade your ship, but basicly it's the same over and over again . Maybe there is some more interesting stuff in the rest of the game.

Why would anyone play this offline when Eve Online is clearly worlds better due to interaction with actual people?

I accept the subscription charge could be an issue, but it's a 14 day free trial.

Re: Who here remembers playing Elite?

Elite.

Yes. First played on BBC then CBM64. I'm crap at games but 2 things spring to mind.

1. Docking computer. Oh the joy when i finally had enough cash to secure the services of the DC. I just could'nt land the bloody thing. Hours dilligently spent mining suns or smuggling (always got busted), finally paid off when I fluked a couple of docks and had the cash to flash.

2. Everybody's dead Dave, Dave everybody's dead. The Blue Danube. I still think the CBM's Sawtooth music is the best thing. Just don't get me started on Crazy Comets.

Because a lot of people have said Eve was horribly dull? I've not tried it yet, but the majority of opinions I've heard (from people who liked Elite) was fairly negative.

On the general topic of "a new Elite" if I had a quid for every time I heard about a new one which was going to be a genuine follow up to Frontier then I would have enough money to pay David Braben and Ian Bell to resolve their differences and make a decent new game.
