Council tax dilemma

I might move to Cardiff in the summer. If I do I shall be living with 2 students. I shall no longer be a student. I have heard two different stories regarding council tax.

One is that I shall only have to pay 1/3 of the tax and the others shall be exempt. the theory is that it is charged per person.

the second is that I shall have to pay the entire amount of council tax by myself. the theory is that it is charged per house, not per person.

Can anyone clarify this for me please?

Re: Council tax dilemma

You pay a set amount of council tax pr. house, regardless of people living there. I can't remember whether a certain percentage is added pr. extra person though. I only lived in Scotland for 6 months, didn't really have time to clarify council tax

Re: Council tax dilemma

Council Tax wise where i am it gets charged by the house. If it's all students then it's free. If there are any non-students then they get a 25% reduction on their bill (but not water rate) but have to pay the rest.

Re: Council tax dilemma

If you are the only non-student then you will get the 25% single person discount as there is only one person elegible to pay in the house (the same as if there was only one person in the house at all, they get 25% off too). The students will have to get a note from their uni saying they are full time students in order for this discount to be applied, otherwise they will assume you are all elegible to pay the lot (this is the same note they would have to get if you were all students in order to get out of paying entirely).

If another non-student should happen to move in then you will have to pay the full lot between you.

Re: Council tax dilemma

So the house only has to pay 75% of the total but would his student house-mates expect him to pay the whole thing by himself as it is him being there that's costing them or would they split it or contribute towards it?

Legally is he liable for the whole thing (the 75%) himself?

they are friends-of--friend so I would have to spend it all myself.

If this is the case then Cardiff is definatly out of the question.

Re: Council tax dilemma

Essentially, yes, the students are exempt from council tax, so it is purely his presence that makes the household have to pay at all. It would be entirely their goodwill if they paid any part. I am not certain, but with the students exemption notes I would assume that they would not be chased for payment - only ASG would.

There are plenty of places around where you can live with non students so all the council tax doesn't fall on you. Council tax here doesn't appear to be that dear either.

You could just move onto the 15th floor

Re: Council tax dilemma

yeh just don't tell anyone that there are any non-students there.

I managed for 6 months in Croydon...

It's way too expensive for me to feel guilty about not paying.

Re: Council tax dilemma

All of a sudden I fid myslef supporting the Lib Dem's policy of replacing council tax with a local income tax.
