Olympic Games 2012
So tommorrow at 12:46 BST we are supposed to find out who gets the chance to host the 2012 Olympics.
As you know the five candidate cities that are up for this are
London
Madrid
Moscow
New York
Paris
So GD who do you think will host the Olympics in the year 2012?
Personally I hope it will be London, failing that I hope for some reason Moscow, I think it would do that country alot of good, however the favourites are Paris closely followed by London, with the outsiders Madrid being the dark horse.
Maybe MM could put up a poll or another mod :/ if they would be so nice!

London and Paris are the only ones in contention.
It's probably going to be Paris.

Re: Olympic Games 2012
It'll probably be Paris.
The only benefit for it being London I can see is they'll improve public transport a bit (albeit no-where near me). Overall it'll make my job more annoying and divert any construction labour/capital into stupid projects away from where it's needed (housing). So I don't really want it to be London.

She's probably already hosted most of the American team in her 'olympic village'.

i'm so pissed off at new york.
they abused 911 like crazy and made all these wild promises to our committee and then didn't follow through on any of them. the people of DC are rightly pissed as hell, and I can imagine similar feelings in San Fran.

Re: Olympic Games 2012
I'm inclined to think it's not going to be Paris based purely on the bad press France has had recently.
I'm not sure whether I want it to be London or not. The improved public transport sounds nice, but I don't know enough about the bid to judge the effects winning would have.

not only athens, the stupid olympics made greece break the 3%-euro-criteria for years. they probably could have found a better use for that money.

Didn't Germany break this criteria too, some years ago? Or was it the allowed dept compared to GDP?

Re: Olympic Games 2012
Hosting the Olympics did Barcelona a world of good, it was a bit of a dump before.
I don't think London would benefit much from hosting it though, it's too messed up as it is :/

Oh, also I forgot to mention that apparently London Council Tax payers will be paying £600m towards the Olympics over the next x years or something like that. So here's keeping our fingers crossed for Paris.

f100 up 44.3, and building materials up 24.4
The mkts seem to think london has a strong chance, or at least there is heavy speculation in construction companies and materials.

Well, aside from having to rescind offers because they were considered to be bribes, and other such stuff.
London doesn't really need the olympics, and the olympics doesn't need london.

I`m glad it`s London, though I did think it would be Paris. I bet the French are well pissed off. Hehe, another dent in their national pride.

I think the point where the French lost it was when Chirac went to Singapore and said this:

I dont think any city is 'sorted'. Once a nice new area is completed an old shitty one just looks worse. Hence it needs to be redeveloped.

It is, but it was also a heavily industrialised area, not at all people friendly. Many areas that were looking worse for wear got fixed up. The establishment of new buildings & business has had an ongoing benifit, many of the olympic venues are used for other community based projects now. Many things involving technology, art & culture were pioneered especially for the olympics. The public transport in Sydney was terrible, improvements they made have lessened waiting times and increased availability of busses and such.
By far the most important though was increase to tourism and trade. Before the olympics we were just some wacky oversized island with kangaroos and people saying G'Day all the time, it helped put us on the map a little more.

I find it amusing the french were apparently "certain" they would win it and now Chirac must feel responsible for the few diplomatic errors he may well had made that could have tipped it. That and Blair apparently seeing all the committee a day or two ago to try and sway the undecided.
