Re: laptop hunt

"More money than sense" is the only thing you can really say with gaming laptops.

Secondly, RAM is a terrible thing to use to imply graphics card performance.

Re: laptop hunt

That's got a 17" screen, I thought you said you didn't want to have to lug a 17" laptop around anymore? If you're going to settle for a 17" one then I again recommend Novatech

Usually, yeah. Although you can get a 14.1" hybrid that runs a Gfg7600, a T7200, and 2GB RAM for 1300e or so, which isn't "too much" for the portability. Depends what you need, of course.

Isn't?

There's a huge difference between a card that has 64mb and a card that has 256mb. A 64 can't possibly run a resolution modern screens run, can it? I guess it has more to do with what sort of a card you have and how much RAM will the card realistically "need". A desktop GeForce 8800 will definately enjoy the 512MB ram, especially if you plug it to a large television and run it on a very high resolution. A laptop GeForce 7600 definately doesn't need more than 256.

ps. Didn't we already have this thread?

I have a 128Mb Radeon 9800 Pro, and it beats the shit out of a Radeon 9200LE I have with 256Mb.

Graphics card manufacturers often put huge amounts of RAM on their terrible cards for people who think "more ram ===== better!"

It's more of a problem with desktop systems than with laptops but the point remains - look at what the cards are first, not the RAM.

Yeah. I guess it depends a lot of the card can actually make reasonable use of it's RAM. A GeForce 7600 Go won't need (more than!) 256mb, a 79xx probably could do.

Re: laptop hunt

ok quick question then

whats better

NVIDIA® Single 7950 512mb GTX
NVIDIA© SLI™ Dual 256mb 7900 GS

and also processors

AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile ML42 2.4GHz 800MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache
AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile ML37 2.0GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7400 2.16GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB

im going to go for 2gb of ram, and upgrade the speed of the hard disk to 7800 from 5400 rpm

thoughts?

Re: laptop hunt

personally i would take one of those:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7400 2.16GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB

depends on the price difference. if only a minor difference take the T7400, otherwise the T7200 is more than fine.

and upgrade the speed of the hard disk to 7800 from 5400 rpm <-- don't do that. it wouldn't bring any significant advantages but it will produce more heat and noise.

can't help on the graphic cards

Re: laptop hunt

T-series are far superior to whatever AMD has currently. T7200 is probably the optimal price-bang of the even T's, of odds, T7100 or T7300. Hard disk from 7800 (7200 or 4800 rpm?, I'll assume it's 7200) is a downgrade. Otherwise, it's an upgrade, and it'll mainly show on load times.

The SLI is faster on raw benchmarks.

That's what made me wonder. A 7800 rpm laptop hard drive. Nowadays they're usually either 4200, 7200, or 5400.

^^ for contradicting myself in my own post, as the poster below noted.

Re: laptop hunt

Please link me to any 7800 rpm notebook drive. The common speeds of 2.5" drives are 4200, 5400 and 7200.

The (exclusive) memory amount on a card can not be used as an indicator of the speed compared to another card. There are even cases when more memory means slower 3d speed. Some high-end 3d cards are simply rip-offs (IMHO) by offering features which will barely make any difference for the buyer for higher prices.
