French cinema
The knowledge of me being able to write passionate, gripping, compelling and creating a certain atmosphere is my biggest handicap. Knowing what I can and not always realizing what I can't.
French cinema over the years and especially the last months, ever since I saw some more movies from them, is I think one of the best movie producing countries there are.
For example: Amelie, 'Love me if you dare' (i do not know the french title), Les uns et les autres, La chateau de ma mere, and so on.
Unfortunately, they have to stop casting gerard depardieu.
But why do I think these movies are great? The whole mindset of the movie is different, there is a whole different type of accent on the emotions and atmosphere, something I've only come across lately in the movie 'the notebook'.
While writing this I think that the French is spearheading the quality of what I call 'EuroCinema', however I do not count the UK as EuroCinema as they just ... don't deliver. They are only good for detectives and Guy Ritchie basically.
Now ofcourse this is all totally my opinion, but anyone else with some intrest in cinema and/or culture who agrees or disagrees and has found various points as to why these movies are generally better?

Re: French cinema
Emmanuelle, for all that is started is actually not so bad a movie, it probably is one of the best movies (acting, scenery etc) wise for it's genre.

Re: French cinema
Taxi
It is actually a fairly decent film and shows how a relatively low budget car chase type of movie is much better than the tripe hollywood manages to spill.
However be warned... the plot isn't too deep. Enjoy it as a car-chase movie. Don't expect something genre-defining.

Re: French cinema
A lot of it is very pretentious and ambiguous though.

Re: French cinema
I'd say it was more a satire than a tribute, but if you say so.

Re: French cinema
Le Haine is one of the best films I've ever seen. Unfortunately I don't really watch that much tv or foreign cinema or anything like that so that's where my knowledge ends!

Re: French cinema
Isn't most French cinema about women rediscovering their sexuality with 'totally predictable' results.
Mind you, they don't have much scope for war films do they ? 90 minutes of watching soldiers surrendering wouldn't be very gripping.

Re: French cinema
Probably, I just watched it a few days ago, and it's the first in my mind that's not a detective or Guy Richie film.

Re: French cinema
The Star Trek TNG films are about a French captain, does that count?
