Tony is watching it. I'm not quite sure why. He is screaming randomly at the tv. He doesn't even like sports :(

Re: Superbowl
the best part is the cheerleaders
however this is painfully slow
they break every 2seconds.
they wear pads
i still prefer rugby. its faster. more fluid. theres no body armour and its higher scoring. (usually anyway)

sadly body armour is working its way into rugby, nowhere near on the size and scale of american football but its there nonetheless
but yes, give me rugby any day

Re: Superbowl
i admit it though, with the general anti-american football sentiment going on on this thread, its really fun watching soccer (and rugby most of the time) - just not exposed to it that much here in the US - although the best sport ever, in the whole universe, is baseball - and i am obsessed with the yankees..

Please God no.
Baseball is as big a pile of wank, probably more so, than american 'football'.
Glorified game of Rounders anyone?
Maybe followed by a world class came of 'IT' or 'knock-down-ginger'?
The only sport worth watching in the whole of America is Ice-Hockey and the Canadians are rather sadly the reason for this.

Re: Superbowl
Baseball sucks horribally. THey need to improve the scoring system.
1 point for first base, 1 point for second bace, 1 point for third base, 2 points for home, and 3 points for a home -run hit. That way the game would be more dynamic.
Soccer is right in the middle between sucking and being ok. I just dont like it.... o
Basketball is alright.. although its rules are cofusing..
Rugby is ok, although i dont get the point of not wearing pads.
Football is excellent.
Why do you people who dont like foot ball not like it?

Re: Superbowl
Hehehe, dude
Baseball: Its cool. Hitting the ball as good as you can demands skills. I assume you never hit a decent ball because you don't like the sport. Points for each base... lol @ sugestion. Would be the same as counting a goal @ soccer double if its scored from a certain distance, and even 3 points when its scored even from further away. Baseball rocks the way it is.
Basketball: The best sport there is. Confusing rules? They are simple. And there are so many things you can do while playing. Awesome moves, actions etc etc.
Rugby: Rugby is Football for farmers. Not for showboys. Look at their heads etc. Most of the time they miss half their teeth etc :P
Football: Not excellent, but pretty nice. I like the action and the strategies. But all the waiting between tries etc is so damn boring.

Re: Superbowl
As far as American sports go, ice hockey and basketball are probably the best because they're actually fast-paced, meaning they're fun to watch. American football and baseball tend to be really boring to watch live due to the fact that the "action" only happens every couple of minutes or whatever. They're the kind of sports where it's only good to watch the highlights so you just get to see the hard tackles and stuff.
It's kindof funny how, despite the fact that rugby players don't wear pads, american football still has the highest injury rate for any sport in the world.
I did watch the first half of the superbowl last night though - there were some nice sacks and a couple of good passes. I went to bed and apparently the second half was better tho.

Scoccer?
Frankly, the only reason that "american football" has any right to be called "football" in the US is that it's one that more of the populace plays/enjoys/follows, thus creating the more efficient shorthand.
As this is an international forum, and one on which many many more people follow Association Football than American Football, there is absolutely no justification.

Baseball : i watched an orioles match live in baltimore an di cannot describe how boring it was. Watching baseball is something akin to watching paint dry. out of a 44,000 crowd...barely anyone was actually watching that much or cheering or anything. there was no atmosphere. there was nothing. the play was crap. it was boring to watch and is just glorified rounders.
Basketball : i quite like this so no problems here
Rugby : You silly fool. Rugby is not for farmers? maybe in america where noone has balls big enough to actually play contact sports without strapping themsleves with body armour. There an old saying...
"Football (the term the rest of the world uses to denote what you yanks call 'soccer') is a gentlemans game played by hooligans. Rugby is a hooligans game played by gentleman."
Its faster. Its more physical. You dont get a break every 5 seconds. Its far far better to watch and also to play. The point of sport is not to 'look cool' playing it but to be the very best at doing it and even so, most rugby players are not toothless redneck farmers....
American Football : damn boring.

Oh so your mad that it has been comerciallized because it IS exciting, fun to watch, and a money- maker.
I dont have a problem with the comercials.. get ddr then you can fast foward past them.
1/3 of Americas watch the superbowl FOR the commercials.. although this time they were sucky. Europeans do make funnier comercials.

Why do 'you' (as in Americans) call it football, as the foot is rarely used to make contact with the ball, and even then, most players will never get to kick it.

Re: Superbowl
if you consider stopping every 5 seconds exciting then i feel sorry for you... its not exciting. its overhyped and the reason americans love it so much is because they are the best at it (odd that because theyre the only country which does it - same with baseball pretty much)
incidnetly the reason rugby players dont wear pads is because they arent pussys (relating to an earlier point) and its more of a contact sport.
and yes the commercials are usually quite good...

People generally like sports because they like the competitive nature of sport. The particulars of the sport are often secondary (sports fans, at least in the US, generally follow more than one sport). Being the best (as a nation) really has little to do with it because most people root for a particular team (which is rarely the best) rather than the entire sport as some sort of nationalistic entity.

Well, the Superbowl anyway.
Football (in the US) is widely played in high schools, universities and professionally. I doubt that television commercials account for that level of popularity.

Re: Superbowl
I watched it just as a comparison to the Ireland vrs Italy rugby match (and rugby in general) that had been on the same day.
It was mildly interesting, more complicated than rugby and alot more stop-starts-annoying bits.
It can get exciting enough though,I must admit. Following the ****ing rules is tough however. Still prefer rugby to it.

It was mildly interesting, more complicated than rugby and alot more stop-starts-annoying bits.
It can get exciting enough though,I must admit. Following the ****ing rules is tough however. Still prefer rugby to it.

Same with an American, or anyone who doesn't understand the rules. The rules in rugby are hard to follow unless you know them. All i know about gridiron is that you have 4 goes to make 10 yards, if you don't then you lose possession.
Where you say it's more complicated to rugby, i'm sure a follower of gridiron would say that rugby is much more complicated, that is assuming they've actually watched a whole rugby match before.

Basketball is alright.. although its rules are cofusing..
Rugby is ok, although i dont get the point of not wearing pads.
