Four thousand posts
and what do I have to show for it?
According to Dante's thread I've more than doubled my post count in the last ten months. This strikes me as a tad excessive. Even worse, I've made nearly 500 posts in the last two and a half months when there's been absolutely nothing to talk about.

Re: Four thousand posts
new ways to make forums fun in the small hours (actually works for all times now)
1.aqquire stopwatch
2.make a post in a forum
3.start the clock
4.keep refreshing the screen as often as you think sufficient, looking to see when someone elses name appears in the last poster column.
5.take note of the time.
6. now play two fun games: try and beat your time in the first version and in the second you have to try and achiev the longest possible time
7.fade to black....

i assumed "double room" meant "double bed"...

Me too (obviously).
And the fact that I don't think you'd be able to rent a shoebox in London for £65 a week.
If you're looking for a room to rent somewhere I've always used www.spareroom.co.uk
There's a "guide to renting in London" on there as well.

You're right. A double room is a room of a particular size, not two rooms.
And no horn, you don't have to be a student in most cases unless it's specific student accomodation (i.e. halls). They might want you to leave for part of the year though (e.g. summer months) but usually it just means it's a shithole.

Actually it depends on how scrupulous the landlord is apparently.
Somthing to do with insurance...
The council tax issue also rears its ugly head if you're not a student.

How are you going to afford £585 a month rent on a shelf-stackers wage?

The deposit is usually 1.5 times the monthly rental, so that would be ~£810. Furthermore, the deposit is by far the easiest part of getting a house - you'll almost certainly need a guaranteur and references to get something which comes with the things you have listed. Squatter's rights mean that letters are extremely strict about who they let to, even if they wouldn't have been before taking that into account.

It is over that. But you also have to pay for council tax, income tax and the like.
And food.

Re: Four thousand posts
Horn, I was on a relatively decent starting salary in London last year and I wasn't looking at more than £105 a week.
There are so many more costs to take into account that you just don't think of. Jakiri mentioned the main ones.
If I were you I'd look at a single room (unless you need or can afford a double, it just isn't worth it). The area is fine - not too expensive. Try lodging or living with foreigners - for some reason they charge lower rent. When I first started this time last year I lodged with a friend's family for £200 a month. It wasn't a great place but it served my purposes fine and allowed me to save up money. I'd do that if I were you.
I don't think the getting-references thing should be a problem for you. You've been living with your family - just get a reference from a teacher/lecturer or something like that.
