[Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
This is one of the most frustrating test matches i've seen.
A couple of days ago England had this all sewn up. Yesterday when they got Jayawardene out you thought they'd go on to win it by cleaning up in the morning and batting the target comfortably in the afternoon.
Right now Sri Lanka's #8 and #9 batsmen are on 38 and 50 odd and a combination of inept catching, a flat pitch and some fantastically gritty Sri Lanka batting has led to England looking condemned to throwing away an easy victory and maybe lose if they are put in to go for a run chase and get sloppy.
Only now are England starting to really turn the screw on them.
I'm pulling my hair out.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
Getting a bit late in the day for us to win it and i doubt even we could collaps that badly if we do get in. 8 dropped catches i think, we'll have to do a hell of a lot better than this if we want any chance in The Ashes.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
i listened to it, and heard boycott make the most racist comment ever on radio (from a non satirical program)
"t' west indies used to be good, now they're awful? what happened? at one point they had fast bowlers falling out of coconut trees"

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
i only listen to five live, and five live sports extra. occassionally classic fm.
Ok, so ive probably heard more racist things from callers in to shows, but not from a presenter/"respected" guest on anything other than satirical comedy, like i said.
Certainly not without an apology after it.
(i wasnt offended by the way, just amused and caught unawares!)

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
i'm not really sure why you're considering it racist.
there are lots of coconut trees in the west indies...
(omg coconuts are the same colour as black people how awful )

Why exactly does it need one? If Bananas grew on trees, and he'd described them as falling out of them, you might have more of a point because of the whole monkey/banana connection.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
he was suggesting that west indian fast bowlers swing about coconut trees. I'm sorry, i didnt realise it was only faux racist if bananas were involved.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
it seemed more like the 'money grew on trees' thing to me rather than a more monkey related thing

Surely if they were swinging about on the trees, they'd be in the trees rather than falling out of them?
Unless of course you assume they're either all incompetent (which carries the additional requirement that being a good fast bowler is either independent or negatively correlated with being able to swing about in trees, which in the latter case raises the question of why they were in the trees in the first place) or a very small percentage of them are, and thus the fast bowler population must therefore be enormous.
Occam's Razor suggest's a simpler interpretation, especially given that Boycott may be famous for beating his wife, but not famous for being a racist.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
I agree with Jakiri and jer, it's just an unfortunate comment that's meant in the most innocent of ways.
On a more humorous note, Ian Botham was once sent by the rest of the England team to run out Boycott, on the grounds that Boycott was scoring so slowly that he was in danger of costing England the match.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
I disagree, boycott makes cricket commentary. Hes a legend and keeps coming up with classic quotes.
He knows the game, can commentate and is general a funny lad. He makes listening to the cricket enjoyable.
For example last year
"Gilo? What the hell is Gilo? Sounds more like jelly than Giles. He bowls like hes a jelly too"
Next over giles took two wickets.
"I dont understand these new batters. In my day we would sit at the wicket and wait for the ball, it could take all day but we wouldnt get out. These new batters have no patience, im still undecided about there skill."
Kevin Pieterson went on to get a century

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
Ah Kevin Pietersen, he'd be soo awsome if he could just stop (occasionally) lofting the ball through the covers at chest height for easy catches. Although he has seemed to stop getting out by sweeping and deep square leg slogs, which was a problem last year, so there's hope.
Yes, I know that was a bit off topic

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
The thing about Kev is that when he's on form he really dishes it out to the opposition and makes it painful.
Great thing about England at the mo is we have lots of youngsters coming through who could get in the squad to replace our older hands in the squad.

Re: [Cricket]England v Sri Lanka
I agree, A Cook looked supreme at times. Love Monty Panesar as well. He's solid, economical and gets a couple of, usually well timed wickets an innings. Really looking forward to when he fully develops his left armed version of Muralitheran's doorsa
