The Real DaVinci Code
Thursday 3rd February, 21:00, Channel 4, UK.
Tony Robinson builds up more hype and gives Dan Brown a free advertising campaign in the process.
Enough allready!

You give some people a role in a historical comedy from the 80's and they end up thinking they're Ian ****ing Kershaw.

Re: The Real DaVinci Code
I have to say I'm not sure what about Robinson's past makes him think he's a qulified historian.
A decade as Rowan Atkinson's sidekick (literally) and a few years burrowing in shallow trenches with beardy archeologists does not a historian maketh.

He was also in "Maid Marian and her Merry Men" which qualifies him to talk about the period 1100-1800.

Yes, as it's well known that both Robin and Marion lived for 700 years.

Overrated, non-factual fiction.

Are you refering to the programme, the thread, or me?
Also, surely fiction is non-factual by definition?

Re: The Real DaVinci Code
I don't think Tony Robinson is trying to be a historian... mainly because a historian wouldn't be much use for the "Real Da Vinci Code". Surely an art expert, or a symbologist, or even a bibular scholar would be better, to make comparisons between the book and reality?

I think he means the book, we can't really make any assumptions about the TV show at this stage.
Since the book claims to be factual, and isn't, I think he was using the repitition of theme for emphasis that this isn't true.

No it doesn't. It says, quite clearly at the beginning, that the "factual areas" are listed in the first page or so. The rest of it, we have to assume, is fictional (although when it comes to a story about what the "true" story of the bible was, who knows if it's fact or fiction).

I'm seeing a lot of people claiming things about this book, without actually providing any evidence that supports the bold and sweeping statements they are making.

Indeed.
It starts off so well, then trails off into dull theories and useless trivia about symbols and meanings.

Re: The Real DaVinci Code
I've read it, if that qualifies me.
It's entertaining enough if you take it as fiction, but Brown makes a hell of a lot of claims with no reference to sources. As a factual account I'd be highly suspicious.

SInce when did a presenter/narrator have to be a historian? They employ researchers for that?

Along with the other facts on that page, the author is stating quite clearly that everything he is stating as fact, is fact. All the rest is quite obviously intended to be fiction.
I'm still at a loss as to exactly what Jakiri is saying isn't "factual" about a fictional novel that clearly states on it's first page what it is representing as fact.

I'm currently reading Foucault's Pendulum, but to be honest I find it overly pretentious drivel. I think I'm only about halfway through though, so perhaps it'll get better.

How exactly are we supposed to verify whether the representations of secret rituals are accurate or not?
