Marines Again

ND's Christmas Surprise
With Christmas drawing ever-nearer, and me having plenty of free time, I've decided to try something a little different. ND's Christmas Surprise takes the form of a vaguely-Winter themed, time-limited thread that will run from today through to just after the New Year. The aim is frequent posting and frequent DMing to get as much done as we can before the end of the period. Such a flood of festive fun! Anyway, I decided the most novel (and thus appealing in the short term) way of doing this would be to seasonalise one of my previous threads, so here's the Marines Christmas Special.

Marines: the Christmas Special
The year is unimportant.

Novagorsk, a small but high-density moon orbitting the gas planet GM-03104K, a planet that also bears the name "Angelska III". Angelska is an isolated system surrounded by void, somewhere on the Eastern Fringe of humanity's sphere of expansion. A binary system, the most visible star is the smaller of the two; Angelska A-Minor, a small, white star that circles its larger cousen, Angelska B-Major, a larger, cooler yellow star. The system has only three planets. One, a scorched ball of rock barely larger than most moons, orbits so close to the two stars that its inward face is molten on the closer sections of its eliptical orbit. The second planet, Angelska II, is a barren world pockmarked with craters - one gigantic crater in particular, that hints at a violent past. The third planet, Angelska III, is a minor gas giant, large by most standards, but small by those of other gaseous worlds. Its blue hued clouds are visible through the thin, but breathable, atmosphere of Novagorsk, itself one of the planet's eleven moons, and the only one with any atmosphere to speak of.

Novagorsk is a hellish ice planet. The surface temperature is stable at around -40 degrees Centigrade, but the temperature drops dramatically when Novagorsk's orbit takes it into the shadow of Angelska III, shielding it from the heat put out by the two suns. The entirity of the planet's surface is covered in ice and rock, some of which is occasionally visible from under the layers of snow deposited by the near-constant blizzards raging around its surface. The surface of the planet is disturbed by mountains - though most of these have been worn to gentle curves by the wind - and by deep ice chasms, some of which are thought to stretch down a very long way indeed. Novagorsk is a very inhospitable world in an isolated, uninhabited backwater system that is free of valuable resources, and it is for this reason that the hides a United Nations Military Research Facility, nestled into the wall of one of the rocky canyons, a veritable iceberg with only a tip showing as surface installations. The facility isn't a major one, but it is of some size. Roughly two hundred qualified researchers, as many assistants, half as many technicians and around fifty support staff run the facility, with a token force of the United Nations Marine Corps to guard it. The facility used to be under the jurisdiction of the Biological Warfare Division's 41st Military Police Regiment, but with civil war engulfing the Fringe, this force has since been replaced by a standard loyalist Marine Company. Novagorsk isn't a nice post, but it is, at least, fairly quiet. The 45th Line Battalion moved into Novagorsk just two days ago, with the Bio Marines having left a day before. Snow falls thick on the ground, and although any festive thoughts must seem pretty remote to Novagorsk's residents, Christmas on the Galactic Standard Calendar is fast approaching. Unfortunatly for all those at Novagorsk Base, the celebrations this year might get a little bit unconventional...

Characters
Most of you know the drill by now. You take the role of a Marine grunt of the UN Marine Corps' 45th Line Battalion - comprising 120 men split into 6 squads. You have recently been assigned to Novagorsk, an isolated research facility hidden away on an Arctic moon of a gas giant, in order to replace a unit of Biological Warfare Division Marines who were redeployed three days ago, presumably to the front. You've heard news of a civil war being fought between rebel separatists and UN-loyalists somewhere in the Western Fringe, but all of that seems fairly remote. Novagorsk is quiet, if somewhat disconcerting. There's no human contact within dozens of light years of the base. You spend most of your time underground. The facility was originally dug into a canyon wall from a narrow cliff face a kilometre down into the drop, but since then its centre has gradually moved upwards. The lower three floors, of which the original floor is the lowest, are now considered off-limits due to reports of tunnel collapses, and have been for years. Noone wants to venture down the two levels immediately above those, however, as they are dark and lonely places, where the few luckless technicians sent down to fix broken cables tell of the eerie sound of wind from the near-constant blizzards outside howling through the vents. Those five levels aside, there are ten floors underground, and a single floor above ground in places. The Marine Barracks is separate from the Research Facility proper on the surface, with Marines either braving the wind and snow to get across, or else moving through the single underground tunnel that connects the 2nd Underground floors. Eight Guard Towers, insulated and heated, form a rough perimeter. Each is two stories high, and each is staffed constantly by two Marines. The towers aren't well-liked by the Marines, because they are remote, and frequently cut off altogether by storms, the only access being by the surface. On the sixth-underground floor is a small docking facility, with freighters able to acess the four hangars via bay doors set into the canyon wall. The control tower juts out into the canyon from the sixth floor, hanging over the unseen floor in a disconcerting manner, and when the wind is at its highest, some controllers report it moving slightly. The control tower also serves as a control room for most of the station. The third and fourth underground floors are the research levels, off-limits to the Marines and to unauthorised technicians. The fifth and sixth underground levels are mostly administrative and support areas, housing mainframes and the like, and the seventh and eighth levels provide quarters and living areas for the facility's staff. Finally, the ninth and tenth underground levels are occupied entirely by the huge generator complexes needed to power the facility's electricity-hungry computers and research equipment, and to heat the base up to a tolerable temperature.

The 45th Line Battalion is a standard Battalion, with one HQ Squad, one Heavy Squad, one Light Squad and three Standard Squads. Each carries the appropriate weaponry and equipment. You will need to construct a character along the following guidelines:

Name:
Rank: (No higher than 2nd Lieutenant)
Age:
Role: [Soldier for shooting / Medic for healing / Technical Op for computering / Engineer for engineering, which includes demolitions]
Squad: [Standard/Heavy/Light/HQ] (Specialist roles such as Technical Operative go in the HQ Squad)
History/Info: (Anything that you feel is relevant about your character goes here, history is not terribly important)

Once two people sign up, I'll begin the fun, then add more people in as they express interest. Remember, frequent posting, frequent DMing. The thread will end on January 3rd. Exactly how it ends is up to you...

You are on guard duty, which for the moment consists of standing next to the reinforced sliding door leading from one of the main perimeter corridors on the third underground floor - one of the entrances into the actual research labs area of the base. The perimeter corridors are four on each floor, forming a square box around the other rooms and corridors on that floor, with stairwells and lift shafts connecting one perimeter corridor to the others. On the smaller floors, like the second underground floor, which only has a few security rooms the armoury and firing range on it, there's a lot of dirt and rock separating the perimeter corridors from the actual rooms of the floor. Guard duty was easy; all you had to do was stand next to the door with your gun to reassure the scientists that the base was secure...or something. Every now and again, a labcoated scientist or research assistant will walk past you up to the door, swipe a keycard through the slot next to the door, have a retina scan performed on them and then enter the rooms beyond - which you are not authorised to go into. Or look into. Or talk about. You don't even know what it is they work on at this base. Presently, you see a male scientist with grey hair walk up to the door. His badge identifies him as "Dr Mortley". He swipes his card through the register, and bares his left eye to the reader for a retinal scan. Red light throws his face into sharp relief for a moment, then there is a negative tone from the door. He mutters something foul under his breath, before turning to you.

"You there! Corporal! This damned lock won't retina scan me properly. Open the door for me." He says, irritably. Of course, you don't have access to open the door, and of course he's going to blame it on you. The scientists were like that.

You look grimly out of the thick, bulletproof glass window that occupied the middle two thirds of the wall the entire way round the Durasteel square room - five metres by five, not a whole lot of room. You're on perimeter guard duty, at one of the Towers. Outside, you can see one of Novagorsk's many blizzards in full storm, white snow whirling passed the windows and building into miniature drifts on the rim of the window on the outside. It's freezing outside, but fortunatly the Tower's heating system is working fine, and you are pleasantly warm. For a moment, you think of your little daughter back on Earth. She loved snow, and she really would have enjoyed watching this blizzard. And, of course, when your daughter was happy, so was your wife, so she'd have enjoyed watching the blizzard as well. It was going to be a lonely Christmas. A cold, lonely Christmas.Behind you, Private Mathers clears his throat. Private Mathers was the Marine you'd been partnered with for this session of guard duty. Private Mathers didn't talk much, and you were bored out of your skull. Maybe you should try engaging him in conversation to pass the time.

Being stationed on this freezing, godforsaken rock for Christmas really did suck. Especially for a draftee. It'd been done by lot, with one man in every hundred from the Inner Sphere being conscripted into the military. You'd been shipped out to some battle on the Western Fringe and blown to pieces by a shell, and after returning to active service after six months treatment and rehabilitation, you'd learned that your unit had been completely destroyed when their transport got wrecked by an asteroid storm in some distant system. You'd been transferred to this stand-alone Battalion then, promoted to Corporal and given a heavy weapon. Of course, you didn't have your heavy weapon at the moment, since there wasn't really any need for it in the facility and it was cumbersome to carry around. You didn't have any weapon at the moment; you'd been assigned to assistant clerical duty in the administrative sector on the fifth underground floor. And, oh man, did it ever suck. You started thinking about home, about what your family would be doing at the moment, probably getting ready for Christmas...

"Morgan...Morgan! Corporal! Pay attention!" Abruptly, the voice of the Office Manager cut across your idyllic images of home. The Manager was in charge of the whole administrative office - which was ten people crunching the numbers and keeping the staff records. He was far too jumped-up for his own good, but you had to do what he said, and you had to keep a civil tongue. "As I was saying," He continued on, clearly enjoying this latest oppurtunity to impress his authority on you yet again. "I need you to take this memo to the Technicians on sixth-underground. Can you do that for me?" So patronising, so insanely irritating, "Systems Maintenance, sixth-underground." He hands you a slip of paper, the memo, which likely has something utterly uninteresting written on it. He probably could have emailed it to the Systems Maintenance technicians on duty. "Off you go." He says, before turning around, probably to go order one of the other office workers around...

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Crazy roled his eyes as the scientist start moaning and shouting at him for yet another problem that wasn't his fault, but got blamed on him. He thought for a moment how easy it would be simply to just blast the scientists brains out and be done with it, but unfortunatly, life isn't that easy. He sighed and waited for the Doctor to stop shouting.

"Look Dr Mortley. You know that us Marines have no access to these levels, or rooms. We cannot open these doors. We're here just to make sure no one but those who are meant to get in. Now, if the door isn't opening, why don't you try again. And if that fails, why don't you go shout at someone who actually cares, and can help. Maybe give someone on the other side of the door a buzz and tell them to open it."

With that, Crazy turned away from the doctor, and for the fifteth time, started counting the squares on the floor.

You're one of the few Heavy Marines who actually has his heavy gear equipped, though at the moment you aren't exactly glad of it. You're in one of the many perimeter Towers, supposedly guarding the surface perimeter of the base. Not that anything living could get through the blizzard raging outside, of course. You're armed with your reinforced, cybernetically-wired heavy armour as well as your heavy weapon (Pulse Minigun/Heavy Flamethrower - pick one). You're on guard duty, out in one of the towers, on your own - since on Heavy Marine should supposedly be able to hold his own if one of the towers came under attack, at least long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Or something. You are swelteringly hot, under the thick layers of armour, and it suddenly strikes you that there's probably a temperature control for the tower somewhere nearby. Maybe you should try and find it...

Crazy
Dr Mortley initially looks surprised, but as your righteous outburst continues, his expression changes untill by the end of it he is practically apoplectic with rage.

"Now you listen to me!" He begins, voice raised, bringing an admonishing finger up to jab it against your armoured vest. "I did not earn a PhD in physics and sign on as a researcher at this base so that I could be lectured by some high school dropout on what I should and shout not be doing! I don't even know why you Marines are here, all you ever do is get in the way, and you're of no help to anyone! Furthermore-" He cuts off, abruptly going silent, as the lights suddenly dim almost to going out briefly, before returning to full power again. Mortley steps back, looking up at the light panels in the cieling. "They're at it again..." He says cryptically, momentarily distracted from his ranting.

"Highschool dropout?! I'll have you know I graduated college. Just because I chose to join the Marines and serve my homeworld and put my life on the line to save people doesn't give you the right to lecture me either! And we're here because we're told to be here. And if we're told to be here, then there is a good reason for us to be here. Now stop complaining to me because you get things wrong. And they're at what again?"

Crazy knew he would probably get shouted at to mind his own buisiness about what the scientists are up to, but the marines were always trying to get the scientists to give them tid bits of information about what secret projects they were working on and what not. It was always worth a try. And he had a bet on with his squad to see who could get the most information out of the scientists.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

He probably should've mentioned somewhere along the road he'd really would've liked to be at home during Christmas, but then again... Even though they were made of flesh and blood, Fluffie wasn't sure wether they had emotions like normal human beings. Probably only when it came to their own wellbeing, not those of the Marines fighting for them. Not drafted Marines, no, Marines who voluntarely signed up for the Core, hoping to better the universe. Or at least, Fluffie was one of those Marines, he didn't know for sure about some of the other people in his Company.

But none of that mattered now. He was on guard duty, here on this forsaken and cold planet. A lonely, boring guard duty, his partner wasn't one of the talking kind, or so it seemed. Sighing softly and unheard, he drew out a picture of his wife and daughter, somewhere on a sunny beach, all the way back on Earth. Happy times which made for happy thoughts in dull and quiet hours. Leaning back for a moment and closing his eyes, he started thinking about his family, back on Earth and the moments they had spent together the last time he had "shore leave".

"I don't care what your damned qualifications are, man," He rants, read in the face and apparently ignoring your question, "the point is I'm doing my job and you aren't doing yours! I'll be reporting this conversation to Captain Yoshikawa, and I am quite sure you will be facing disicplinary acti-" The lights dim again, this time going out altogether. And they don't come back on. You hear a voice drone over the facility speakers, the facility's computer systems reporting on the blackout, no doubt.

"Generator 1 overheated," Says the voice. It sounds odd, flat and with no enunciation, with each word pronounced very much apart form the last, "emergency crash shutdown initiated. Generator 2 standing by. Generator 2 activated." And, a second later, the lights are on again. Then, after a moment, they dim yet again, before returning to full brightness. Dr Mortley looks angrily up at the cieling, apparently blaming it for the blackouts.

"What on earth are they..." He pauses, then turns to face you again. "Corporal! Get down to the generators and find out what the devil is going on down there, get them to make sure there are no more blackouts. This could have a very disruptive effect on my experiments." And, of course, you're not allowed to leave your post without express permission from the Captain. And, of course, you can't just ignore the scientist's order, you've got to radio into the HQ Squad...

Fluffie
You think happy thoughts, thoughts about your wife and daughter. The happy thoughts dissapear abruptly when the lights suddenly go off. You hear the gentle whir of the heating system cut off as well. The happy thoughts are replaced by distinctly unhappy thoughts as you consider the prospect of slowly freezing to death in the tower. Suddenly, the lights are on again, as is the heating system, but just a second later the lights dim again. You'd better radio the HQ Squad and find out what's up.

"Sir, we'd better radio the HQ Squad and find out what's up," Says Private Mathers, practically the first words he's spoken to you since entering the tower.

Once again, Crazy rolled his eyes and let out a sigh. Bloody scientists. Think they're all high and mighty just because they have a huge wage that lets them play around with things that mostly shouldn't be played around with. Mutter curses to the scientist under his breath, that no-one could possible hear, Crazy clicked on the radio to talk to the lovely officers of the HQ.

"Lieutenant, I've got an... er... a doctor Mortley here who wants me to go an take a look at the generators. Find out whats wrong with them et all. Requesting permission to take a look sir."

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Armoury
The staple of any Marines thread is the assortment of deadly weaponry. The standard mode of weapon in the future represented by Marines is the pulse gun, which fires rifled bullets that explode on impact. Highly accurate, and packing some punch besides. The kind of weaponry and equipment you can carry depends on your character. You all get 10 Equipment Points to spend on starting equipment. You'll have all of your starting equipment at the start of the thread unless I specify otherwise.

Standard Marines
Pulse Rifle OR Assault Shotgun (Standard Issue)
This automatic rifle carries a thirty round clip of pulse round. Accurate at medium and short range, and in single shots reasonably accurate even at long range, the pulse rounds kill unarmoured targets with ease, and will penetrate standard-issue armour within a few shots, if not on the first (targets wearing reinforced armour may take more hits to bring down). The Pulse Rifle is a reliable weapon in general that requires little maintenace, though it does have a tendency to jam in the cold...

If, on the other hand, you opt for the delightful M2 Assault Shotgun, you will have a lot more punch at close range, with less at medium and long range. The M2A1 holds eight cartridges in its loading bar, which can be fired one at a time by use of pump action, or (by flicking a little switch on the side) discharged in full automatic by simply holding down the trigger. Whilst the latter is certainly devastating, it is rather innaccurate...

Standard Armour (Standard Issue)
Standard-issue armour given to all Marine Corps personnel. The standard issue armour isn't very durable at all, and unless reinforced will usually be penetrated easily within a few hits. It consists of a vest protecting the torso, with optional elbow and knee pads. Also included is a helmet, complete with the Combat Tactical Visor MkIII, through which you can be sent artificial visual waypoints to follow, as well as information overlays. Included in all standard helmets are rudimentary coms systems. The visor also has a thermal imaging mode which will provide detailed visual capability even in total darkness.

Reinforced Armour - 4 EP
Reinforced armour is heavier than its standard-issue counterpart, and is an optional extra for standard Marines. It will take more hits than the standard-issue armour to pierce, and is generally more reliable. The vest and the helmet are both reinforced with this upgrade.

Grenades - 3 EP
A pack of 3 grenades, which may be High Explosive, Smoke or Flashbang in any combination. Five second fuse.

Incendiary Grenade - 2 EP
A single incendiary grenade which will explode in flame on detonation. Five second fuse, useful surpressive weapon.

ECM Chaff Grenade - 2 EP
A single chaff grenade which will release a cloud of metal strips into the air on detonation, which have the effect of interfering with electronic signals, blocking visor radio transmissions, and interfering with visor imaging. The chaff has the same effect on friendly and enemy equipment. Its effects last for roughly a minute.

Pulse Pistol - 3 EP
A nine-round clip pistol that fires pulse rounds, accurate at short range, not so much at medium range, virtually inneffective at long range. A useful back up weapon to pull out if you suddenly find yourself out of ammo for your pulse rifle...

Combat Knife/Bayonet - 1 EP
Sure, it's not much use in the modern environment, but if you strap it you your rifle as a bayonet you can occasionally kill something. Plus, it looks pretty damn cool...

Laser Sight - 2 EP
Provides a helpful red dot showing you where your bullets are going to go. You may fit it to one gun and one gun only, compatible with pulse rifle or with pulse pistol. Can be fitted to the other two accessories.

Silencer - 2 EP
Muffles the sound of your gunshots so that only those close to you will hear them. You may fit it to one gun and one gun only, compatible with pulse rifle or pulse pistol. Can be fitted with the other two accessories.

Scope - 3 EP
A scope for the standard-issue pulse rifle that increases its accuracy at long range by helping you aim. Magnified to X2. Can be fitted in combination with the other two accessories.

Underslung Grenade Launcher - 4 EP
An underslung grenade launcher for your pulse rifle, which accepts and fires standard grenades. It comes with a single HE grenade for free. By operation of a simple, two-setting switch, can be made to fire bounce (five second fuse) grenades, or explode-on-impact grenades. Must be reloaded manually from the muzzle after firing.

Gas Mask - 3 EP
This handy piece of kit is applied to the head in order to allow you to breathe air laden with chemicals without dying or feeling their effects. Comes included with one of the ever-unpopular "Tanks" of compressed breathing fluid that can be activated in low or no-oxygen environments in order to allow you thirty minutes of uninterrupted (if foul-tasting) respiration. The gas mask does not make your suit fully enclosed. The gas mask comes with its own visor included, and your helmet can be worn over the top of it.

Light/Recon Marine
Pulse Rifle (Standard Issue)
This automatic rifle carries a thirty round clip of pulse round. Accurate at medium and short range, and in single shots reasonably accurate even at long range, the pulse rounds kill unarmoured targets with ease, and will penetrate standard-issue armour within a few shots, if not on the first (targets wearing reinforced armour may take more hits to bring down). The Pulse Rifle is a reliable weapon in general that requires little maintenace, though it does have a tendency to jam in the cold...

Light Armour (Standard Issue)
Standard-issue armour given to all Light Marines. Famously referred to as "paper armour" by the luckless Marines that are issued with it, light armour isn't good for a whole lot that anyone can think of, though it is quite warm, and is also lighter than normal armour to carry. Comes with vest and a helmet equipped with the standard peripherals.

Coms Booster (Standard Issue)
Boosts the power of your helmet coms units to make them less vunerable to interference.

Recon Assault Shotgun (4 EP)
Ah, the perks of being a Ligh Marine. The M2A1 Advanced Assault Shotgun, a variant of the M2 available to Standard Marines, is lighter than its counterpart, but only carries 6 cartridges loaded rather than 8. It fires pump action, but as well as firing single shots it is also possible to discharge two cartridges simultaneously (for an extremely powerful close range shot) by use of the second trigger. The recon assault shotgun is smaller than its normal counterpart, allowing it to be carried easily with another weapon, but is also less accurate - not that this will matter too much at close range.

High Velocity SMG (4 EP)
Alternatively, a Light Marine looking for a little extra power might want to take the H&K Mp10 Sub Machine Gun, a compact beast of a weapon replete with a 30 round cartridge which, on full automatic, will be expended completely within four seconds of sustained firing. The Mp10 sends the bullets out fast, and at a velocity high enough that it will easily penetrate most armour at close range, but its short barrel length makes it useless at long range, and the only way you'll hit at medium is by use of single shots and careful bursts.

Sword Bayonet - 1 EP
As a symbol of their bravery (stupidity) in signing up for the Marine discipline with the highest casualty rate of any UN Military service arm ever, Light Marines are allowed the sword bayonet. At two feet in length, it is much longer than the normal bayonet, and can also be wielded as a kind of short sword. A status symbol as much as anything.

Reinforced Armour - 4 EP
For Light Marines, reinforced armour is something of a must-have. It provides better protection than the standard-issue armour given to Standard Marines, but is also a lot lighter and more flexible.

Scout Drone Pack - 4 EP
A bumper pack of fun, this consists of three tracked scout robots equipped with cameras and rudimentary scanners. Running almost silently, the deployed scout can be guided and its information viewed via a small screen that attaches to the topside of your pulse rifle. They don't have a long battery lifetime - only a few minutes - but they can fit into places that others can't, and sometimes get by guards undetected.

Heavy Marine
Reinforced Cybernetic Armour (Standard issue)
A full body, heavy armoured suit that can take a few seconds of sustained pulse rifle fire before being pierced. Cybernetic wiring is included, and without it the Heavy Marine would find it impossible to move. Heavy armour increases a Marine's size significently, and he may experience difficulty getting around. Very bulky and difficult to turn in, but providing excellent protection.

Pulse Minigun (10 EP)
A heavy minigun firing pulse rifle rounds at a fantastic rate, sustained fire with a minigun will exhaust your ammunition supply (belt-fed) quickly, so it's best to do it in bursts. The barrel can be made to rotate ready to open fire at the full rate, but this will create a whirring noise which could give you away to the enemy. The minigun is made from a lightweight alloy, but is still quite cumbersome. It is accurate at short range, and at medium range the hail of bullets will hit enough that you won't notice the innaccuracy much anyway.

Heavy Flamethrower (10 EP)
This flamerthrower hurls a gout of flame five metres long in a straight line in front of you, incinerating anything that gets in its way. Pretty self-explanatory, really. Use with caution if flammable materials abound.

Special Role
Pulse Rifle (Standard Issue)
This automatic rifle carries a thirty round clip of pulse round. Accurate at medium and short range, and in single shots reasonably accurate even at long range, the pulse rounds kill unarmoured targets with ease, and will penetrate standard-issue armour within a few shots, if not on the first (targets wearing reinforced armour may take more hits to bring down). The Pulse Rifle is a reliable weapon in general that requires little maintenace, though it does have a tendency to jam in the cold...

Military Issue Laptop (7 EP, Technical Operative ONLY, Technical Op REQUIRES)
A powerful laptop computer equipped with all the tools a Technical Operative needs to do some serious hacking, as well as do things like set squad waypoints. Your success in using this device will depend largely on what you're trying to do. Opening a door is easy, subverting a turret network not so.

Medic Kit (5 EP, Medic ONLY, Medic REQUIRES)
A basic kit including bandages, painkillers, a few packs of blood plasma, basic surgery tools and a variety of other bits used to patch people up with.

Engineering Kit (6 EP, Engineer ONLY, Engineer REQUIRES)
A toolbox of fun including most of the things you'll need to perform basic mechanics, as well as a blow torch (with limited fuel supply) for cutting through doors (and welding them shut), and a variety of explosives with timers.

Maybe I'll add in more stuff soon.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

would it be possible to swap that cumbersome pulse rifle with a pulse pistol + laser sight? So that I don't have to carry around a pulse rifle and a laptop and other stuff.

if it is, this will be my equipment set:
Pulse pistol(+laser sight) -free
standard body armour-free
laptop-7 EP
grenades-3 EP

if not, this will be my equipment set:
pulse rifle-free
standard body armour-free
laptop-7 EP
grenades-3 EP

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Equipment to be done when I've bugged ND enough into giving me an Underslung 'nade Launcher too

//

The man's a bloody genius...

Fluffie got up and nodded in the direction the soldier's voice was coming from, realising the man wouldn't see it the moment he did it. Getting his helmet from the table he had put it on earlier, he neatly put it on, activating the thermal imaging and casting a few glances out of the window. He didn't really expect to see enemy troops advancing on them, but there was always a slim chance of hell freezing over while pigs flew above his head.

"Do it. Sounds unlikely, but I'll check our surroundings."

Doing exactly what he says, Fluffie continues peering out of the windows of the guard tower (and if there are any, he checks radar/sensor consoles), hoping to detect nothing at all. His hopes were that this was just a glitch or some tech screwing around with the power generators. Anything else would probably mean an even darker and colder Christmas, which on this planet, didn't mean a whole lot of fun... Back on Earth, dark and cold would mean you'd have to keep each other warm, but with these guys.

They didn't really float Fluffie's boat.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

how can you sling a 'nade launcher below a minigun or a flamethrower?

No use for it as a result, just roll a 'nade over to them

ooc- i take the, flamethrower -ooc

mad cat grumbles underneath the layers of armour, the heat was starting to get to him, he blinks to shift a drop of sweat from his eye and goes in search of the thermostat, he hoists the heavy flamethrower to waist height and checks the fuel as his search goes on.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Master Chief Petty Officer is a naval rank, not a Marine rank, and I shall have no such Halo tomfoolery in my thread. Mr PK, please change your rank to Sergeant or 2nd Lieutenant (depending on whether you want to go up or down from your present near-Officer-but-not-quite rank).

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

DMing beginning for the day - 8th December 2004

All
Added weaponry to the Standard Marine and Light Marine armouries.

Flapjack
Technical Ops are all corporals. But apart from that it's all fine.

You're with the HQ Squad - which is currently running at half strength - in the Marine Barracks area of the base. The lights were out a moment ago, but then they came back on, and then they flickered out again briefly before returning once more. Captain Yoshikawa doesn't look happy. He never really looks happy. You've gathered from his various rants that he was on a promotion fast track before he got his eye blown out in a chance starship engagement. Then he got redeployed to this outfit, and then sent to this moon, and he isn;t happy about it. The lights dim briefly again, and the base's computer system gives another strangely disjointed announcement over the speakers.

"Warning, Generator 2 temperature approaching maximum levels, secondary generator emergency shutdown in approximately 2 minutes."

Captain Yoshikawa swears, then turns to you.

"Remmon, if that generator goes out, we're in trouble, and our computer system just went down so we can't contact support down in the base to find out what they're doing. Get down to the fifth underground level yourself and get them to sort the network out, and while you're there try and get them to put less strain on the generators or something. Hop to it!"

Crazy
The Coms Operator's voice returns over the speakers after a few moments.

"Confirm, Corporal Crazyboy, you've got permission to track down to the generators. 9th underground, in case you'd forgotten. Get there and back as quick as you can - and the Captain wants you to report in once you're down there. Out."

Fluffie
No sooner have you activated the thermal imaging on your visor than the lights are on again - filling your vision with impossibly bright white light, and with no small amount of pain - before after two seconds or so they go out again. You look out of the windows, and see no enemy troops advancing, though you didn't exactly expect to, with the blizzard and all. This done, you walk over to the sensors and try to check them - but the sensors are gone; the power's our, and so are the computer systems. You decide not to bother trying to rado HQ, since there'd probably be no signal anyway. The lights haven't come back on yet, and neither has the heating system. It's probably just your imagination, but you swear you can feel it getting colder in the tower already...

Mad Cat
You locate the thermostat, but find that you can't actually flex your armoured arms enough to reach it, positioned on the wall in such a way as it is. Suddenly, your problems are gone, as the lights suddenly flicker before going out altogether, plunging the room into darkness. You hear the gentle whirring of the heating system cease as well. You don't have to worry about feezing to death since your suit generates a fair bit of heat itself, but you're going to need to do something. You could try radioing HQ, but they probably wouldn't even get the signal. Your only other options are either to stay in the tower and wait it out, or to trek across the snow-blasted ice toward the base, which is about a hundred metres away.

PK
You're on guard duty. Or, you were on guard duty, the lone Marine assigned to watch the hangars in case anyone tried to steal a ship or anything similar. There were two freighters currently in the hangars - there were four such rooms divided by thin walls. The hangars took up three stories, with a railing running around the wall where the second storie would be, leading out to the sixth-underground level. Beyond the bay door allowing exterior access to the hangar you're currently in is the raging blizzard - you can hear the wind howling. At any rate, you can't see this at all at the moment, because the lights have gone out. You'd better go check that the technicians working on the other freighter in Hangar 3 (you're currently in "Hangar 1") are all right, and help them out.

Possesing no special skills and showing no exceptonal promise above that of a standard engineer, lewis has had little real combat experience in his short career. Being relativly new to the base he still has high spirits for the coming holiday, but does miss his family back home on earth at times like these. Having being amrried for about two and a half years at end of the month, this being his first posting so far away from home.

"Confirmed. Will report in as soon as I get there."

Without taking a look at the scientist, Crazy heads off towards the nearest elevator/stairs that will take him to the generators. It was good to actually have something to do in this base, rather than stand around. Even checking out the generators...

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

No Helmet to Helmet radio-ing then?

Equipment:
SMG, Pulse Rifle
Light Reinforced Armour
Comms Booster
Sword Bayonet

A Sword-Bayonet, which he usually only carries with him when there's an use for it, for ceremonial purposes, when ordered to or when he feels like it. If up to me, today he hasn't got it on him at the moment.

1 EP left, spent on cigarettes!

//

"Outside looks clear enough." concluded Fluffie after having checked the windows and the inoperative sensor. Hoping that the Reinforced part of his Armour also meant it was warmer than the normal Armour for them Light Marines, he made a mental note of to keep moving if the power outage continued much longer. Turning down the thermal imaging of his helmet before taking the latter off and putting it on the table, Fluffie rubbed his eyes for a bit... Whoever was responsible for the lights acting crazy, was going to get at the very least a not so happy word from this corporal.

"It's probably useless, but have you tried radioing them yet, Mathers?" he asked. Never knew who could be listening. "If nobody answers, we'll just wait for a bit and see if it gets fixed, if not..." Not finishing his sentence, Fluffie started wondering about what they'd do. Leave the Guard Post unmanned? But what if they needed them back at the Base... Oh, questions, questions, questions. Finding his chair and sitting down, Fluffie started thinking.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

*Remmon quickly turned around, snapping off a short "Yes Sir.", before heading down the short ladder to the second floor, from where he quickly went through the connecting tunnel and into the research base itself, where he takes the first staircase and rushes down to the fifth level, all with the aid of his helmet's nightvision system*

*As soon as he arrived he rushed through the perimeter, luckily the security systems opened in case of a powerfailure and as such he was able to reach the administrative offices in much less time then it would normally take, where he stopped a random person and asked for the person in charge of maintaining the electrical systems*

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Darkling
It's really, really cold. Some communications relay for the Marine Barracks blew a fuse, and since the only other Engineer in the Battalion is asleep, you have to go and fix it. Just your luck that the thing had to be outside. As well as your armour, weaponry and equipment, you are wearing a standard issue winter coat which, though it goes the full length of your body, does little to keep out the cold from the incredible blizzard raging around you - it's difficult enough just to stay standing, The coms relay is up on top of the building, which is only accessible by a ladder running up the back wall. You are currently walking around the outer wall of the building, trying to reach the ladder. Climbing it is going to be a trial. You round a corner, nearly slipping on a patch of ice, and see the ladder up ahead. You could have sworn the ground just tremored slightly. Suddenly, static buzzes intrusively in your ears, and you hear the Communication Operator's voice.

"Corporal Morgan, the power's completely gone inside the base. If it stays out the heating and life support systems are going to go down too, and we'll all freeze to death." The Coms Op, Lieutenant Riley, sounds a bit strained, which isn't surprising considering he's the only Coms Op in the Battalion, and has to be on standby almost constantly, if not on duty. "Fix that coms relay asap and report back to us when we're done - if the power doesn't come back on, we're going to need to send out a distress signal."

Crazy
Dr Mortley's smug grin - though misplaced, since you would actually enjoy getting away from your post for a bit - is nevertheless rather annoying. You set off down the corridor, away from the Mortley door, passing through glass paned, double sliding doors and into the perimeter corridor. At this moment the lights flicker, then the steel floor plates beneath your feet tremble, and you hear a distant rumbling. The lights go out altogether, and suddenly you're in the dark. Almost felt like an explosion...abruptly, you hear a sharp tone ring in your ears, and one of the base controllers speaks over the facility coms.

"Attention all personnel, major explosion reported in secondary generator, casualties reported, repeat, casualties reported. All facility technicians report to your emergency posts and bring the auxilliary generators online immediately. All facility medical personnel on duty to Generator Two. Please remain calm." Says the voice, but it's kind of difficult to remain calm; no power meant no life support, and no heat, and no light, and if there was a fire, you'd be breathing the thin oxygen outside pretty quickly. Suddenly, another voice cuts across your line of thought.

"Corporal, Captain says you're to double time it down to the generators and report on the situation, out." Says the Lieutenant's voice again. You can't see a thing, but you know from familiarity that there's an elevator shaft door and a stairwell door down to the right.

Fluffie
You decide that now would be a good time for a cigarette - after all, with the smoke alarms offline, noone would know, so you wouldn't be able to be reprimanded for it. Lighting one end of the paper cylinder of relaxation, you taking a deep draw from the other end, and instantly die of lung cancer.

Flapjack
Going a bit too quickly there, I think, I'm the DM after all...

Since you're one of the Battalion's two Tech Ops, and since the other one is asleep, you don't have any navigational waypoints, and in your rush to get down to the administrative area as quickly as possible, you soon find yourself lost. Presently, the floor shakes beneath your feet, you hear a subdued rumbling - sounding distant - and then the lights go out altogether. You lose your footing from the tremors, trip over and crack your head on a steel door. Most painful. Pulling yourself to your feet, you find that you can't see a thing. Better turn on thermal imaging and get some bearing on your surroundings. Suddenly, you hear footsteps coming up from somewhere behind you - they're fairly distant.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

ooc/ I thought the facility lay-out was highly regular?? Oh well /ooc

*Remmon quickly reached for his pistol as the thermal imaging gave a clear overview. Even though it was unlikely the footsteps would be from a hostile person, Remmon always thought it was better to be prepared then it was to be caught by surprise*

*Remmon quickly scanned the surroundings, trying to find his bearings and the fastest route down to the administrative offices*

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Fluffie
"With the blizzard going sir, I'm not sure it'll get through. Still, it's more powerful than the normal headset, so I guess it's worth a try." Replies Mathers, already beginning to sound a bit nervous. This said, he turns away from you, and holding the index finger of his right hand down on the side of his helmet - pressing the "transmit" button - he speaks into his helmet microphone.

"Tower D to HQ, Tower D to HQ, come in HQ..." He says, before pausing for a few moments, then continuing. You sit down on one of the benches present in the tower and set to thinking. Getting back to the base in this storm was going to be tricky, but then you both had winter coats - though they weren't the warmest of things. The main risk was dying of exhaustion, it being so cold and the air on this moon being so thin. Still, as long as the two of you stuck together, you ought to be able to make it. But then, you'd be abandoning your post...they'd hold you responsible for that. The power hasn't come back on yet. Maybe there was something wrong at the base - you had no way of knowing. Presently, you come to again and hear Mathers' voice.

"Sir...sir!" He says, looking a bit more nervous than he did before. "I can't raise HQ on the coms, sir. We're on our ow-" he cuts of speaking sharply, as you hear the sound of something hitting the metal roof of the tower. Then another thing, then another. Then it goes silent again. "W-what was that?" Says Mathers, not looking too collected, now holding his pulse rifle and pointing one end up at the roof. He did have a gas mask, so he'd probably have no problems making it through the blizzard.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

As soon as Private Mathers stopped speaking so suddenly because there was a knocking at their roof, Fluffie had immidiately moved his hand down his weapon, making sure the clip was loaded and his rifle ready. With the clicking sound these guns always made when a bullet was loaded into their chamber, Fluffie reached out for his helmet and put it back on again, not yet switching to thermal imaging, he remembered the earlier accident with his eyes all too well.

"Get a grip, soldier." he said, with a firm and collected voice. If he himself sounded like a tough guy, maybe the other would draw inspiration from it. If there would be things going down, Fluffie's guess was that he'd need every able hand around. But someone had to go outside and check it out, and Mathers was the one with the gas mask, which'd make that job a whole lot more fun.

"Get your coat and gas mask on and check outside, or give the mask to me and I'll do it."

"Bollocks. Blood scientists with their stupid experiments..."

Crazy switched on the infra-red imaging on his helmet, to get some vision back, then started running. Heading to the right, where he knew the elevators and stairs to be, Crazy barged through the door. Knowing it would be usless to use the elevator, as the power was out, Crazy started the ardious journey down to the flood containing the generators.

Character fine, Hewitt. And why on earth would you need a sniper rifle at this nice, quiet research facility?

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

The bitting cold enough to freeze a man to death ddint not help his rather sombre mood right now, the power and slight tremor issues only added to it.
"Understood ill get right on it"
Replying to the message as soon as it came letting of a sigh as well, trying to sleep around thisplace was diffcult in a barracks full of marines on shifts through the night. Coming up to the ladder as its exposed metal feels icy to the touch, tightening the straps to his kit and slinging the pulse rifle over his shoulder Lewis start to begin his upwards ascent. (Asusming of course its in the direction im going)

Mumbling to himself in an effort to ignore the howls of the wind.
"Well there snow I suppose all thatst needed now is some nice lights and a tree, maybe a fire as well. Cant beat sitting by a roasting fire with a warn drink and the one you love in your arms."
Hoping against fate that warm thoughts would make this treck all a bit easier least it would lighten his mood a bit, continuing to make his way up the rather harsh climb.

Re: ND's Christmas Surprise

Flapjack
You turn on your thermal imaging and, pulling yourself to your feet, turn to see who is walking down the corridor. It turns out to be one of the facility technicians. The man is staggering forward with his arms held in front of him, and clearly cannot see where he is going. He stops a few paces in front of you, before stepping back.

"is someone there? Who's there?!" He sounds quite nervous, you notice that he doesn't have a torch or anything similar.

Fluffie
You tell Mathers to pull his act together, and then tell him to either go outside and check what the noise was, or give the mask to you so that you could do it. Toward the end of your orders, the two of you begin to hear a tapping noise coming from the roof - footsteps. The taps are irregular, so there are presumably several things up on the roof. They move toward one of the building's corners, and then the tapping stops. Mathers has his thermal imaging on by now.

"Maybe...maybe it was just a bit of ice from the storm," He says hopefully, obviously not wanting to go outside. Suddenly, you hear beeping coming from down below toward the door - someone keying in number on the key lock outside. Then, seconds later, you hear the door slide open. There are people downstairs in the tower. You can't see them, naturally, because the only stairs down are on the other side of the room. Mathers has fallen silent, but he's aiming his pulse rifle at the stairs...

Crazy
You turn on thermal imaging, throwing everything into sharp, green-shaded relief. The views is eerie, but very clear. You start running off to the right, and within moments have spotted the two doorways leading outwards. Figuring that the elevators wouldn't be working because the power was out, you instead started down the stairs. Down you go, plunging 6 levels downwards. You can hear shouting coming through the doors from the perimeter corridors on each level you pass. Then, you get down the underground 9, the first generator level, and everything is silent. Walking out into the perimeter corridor, you look left and right, and see nothing. The two generator rooms are huge, each taking up two stories and half of the room boxed in by the perimeter corridors. Should be a door inwards somewhere down the corridor. You run in that direction, opening the door - to the right of it is a plaque reading "Generator Room 2". You key in the combination for the door lock and it slides open. What greats you is wreckage - the generator has been completely destroyed, and burning fragments of debris litter the floor. Much of the room is scorched by fire. A few mangled, pathetically chared corpses lie about the place. You are standing on a steel platform running mid-way up the room's walls. There is a staircase leading down the floor of the room on underground 10 floor. Looking around, you eye catches a figure lying still on the ground on the platform over to the right. The corpse doesn't look mangled or scorched, and is wearing a technician's uniform.

Hewitt
Underground level 3; one of the research floors. Your job was to stand next to the double, main entrance doors and, apprently, take abuse from some of the more arrogant scientists. The lights are out, but the technicians inside the labs have already got the auxilliary generators - battery-powered units that used hydrogen fuel cell cycles to keep themselves running for quite some time - on, and so you can make out the corridor from the dim white emergency lighting coming from the other side of the glass pannelled main entrance door. You haven't recieved any communication from HQ yet. On the other side of the door is a standard reception affair, with a desk and a chair and a personal computer of some description. There's usually a technician or lab assistant sitting there and checking everybody who enters in, but he dissapeared into the labs once the lights went off, and didn't come out again. As you look into the blindingly white room, the door further into the labs suddenly opens, and a reasonably attractive, white labcoated female lab assistant of roughly your age runs out, completely hysterical. She desparately keys in a combination into the number lock on the other side of the main door, but there's no replying tone from the lock, and the doors don't move. She spots you, and begins frantically hammering on the glass pane of the door with the palm of her hand.

"Help! Help me! You have to get me out of hear! Please!" She shouts, clearly losing it. What the hell could be going on in those labs...the glass panes weren't bulletproof or Transparasteel; you should be able to smash through them fairly easily with the butt of your rifle if she stands back.

Darkling
You reply to the Coms Operator, not respecting any return acknowledgement, and not recieving one. He was probably pretty overwhelmed with traffic if the power was out inside the base. Letting your pulse rifle hang by its strap, you reluctantly start climbing the ladder. Several times, the wind gusts powerfully, threatening to tear you off the ladder and throw you onto the snow below, but you perservere, and eventually you're up on the roof of the Marine Barracks. The roof is smooth Duracrete, and it's covered in patches of ice. Getting across it won't be easy. Up ahead, through the billowing whorls of snow, you can make out an antenna with several dishes pointing off of it in various directions. That was the coms relay. It was set onto a large rectangular box sticking out from the roof of the barracks, which was the box with the wiring, and the fuses, in it. No sooner have you focused on the box, however, than you see something is wrong; the access panel in the box's side is already hanging open. The panels are always secured tightly by no less than four screws, so there's no way it could have opened on its own; someone must have tampered with it before you got here.

" ... Bloody hell ... "

Crazy once again switch on his helmet radio

"HQ, this is Crazy. Generator 2 is gone. Completely. Nothing left but molten scrap. Doesn't look like anyones alive down here... wait a minute. I see someone. Looks like a technician. He might still be alive. I'm going to take a look"

Crazy switched on both the lights on his helmet and on his Assault rifle and switched off the thermal imaging. He found a ladder and made his way down to the floor of the generator room, then carefully made his way towards what looked like the only survivor of hte explosion.
