Why didn't the sea move?
Just a bit of a wierd one maybe some braniac can tell me why
I was ony a plane coming home to dublin this morning. When we were over the irish sea, it was clear enough to see the sea, but it wasn't moving. It looked like some had taken a picture of all the ripples and waves and stuck it to the window.
Now I know through all my wisdom and stuff that sea does in actual fact move so how come I couldn't see it move?
On another note air hostesses on ryanair have greatly improved in the last year. I think yer man in charge should have a special flight where there in bikinis!

Next time ask the pilot to fly a bit lower for a while so you can see the sea moving.

Re: Why didn't the sea move?
It's just because you were too far away to distinguish the different waves.

Re: Why didn't the sea move?
ive often wondered that when flying across the pond.
from 40,000feet its eerily still. and the 'wave tops' stay in precisely the same place. its often crossed my mind to check it out but i always forget once ive landed.

Re: Why didn't the sea move?
It'll be because you're looking at a different scale of wave. There'll be much movement on a smaller scale, with larger, more static, differences being the ones visable.

Re: Why didn't the sea move?
did you know the small ripples you see repeat in the same patterns as larger scales? also happens in the desert with sand.

It takes to much processing power to render so God scales down the level of animation at great heights, its the same reason that we have a horizon because if the view distance was too high we'd get frame rates dropping all over the place.

Re: Why didn't the sea move?
well given that the majority of the waves you look at will effectively be a single set of waves travelling in some direction, you won't see them move because there is no adequate frame of reference from which to judge movement, especially given that the aircraft is moving. our eyes tend to lock to a particular feature and movement is judged by such things as changing parallax and so on, and on a big flat sea, there is none. Furthermore, perspective and the speed of the waves would make the waves seem stationary - remember you are some 10km away from them as you stare from the window - work out the angles yourself.
