[youtube] alternative desktop
its just an example and obviously isn't finished but i really think this shows promise, as odd as it may seem the ability to throw icons about the desktop is the nicest for me, i get fed up of having to drag documents across a screen (especially with big monitors), i hope gates or google or someone does something with this

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
that is pretty cool.
Although surely you need a very busy desktop to make it worthwhile?

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
It'd be perfect for my Mac if it were ever to be released on OSX.
I download software manuals for products I support all the time due to version changes and they're all over the place on my desktop. The annoying thing with OSX is when it runs out of space to put icons it literally starts putting them on top of one and other. The system demonstrated there would be ace for me.
I know, if I were slightly more organised, I could simply go with a nice folder structure, but I'm lazy!
Also, look at something called Lowfat - it's somewhat similar but aimed at photography and hoping to go open source on Linux - http://macslow.thepimp.net/?page_id=18
Video demonstrations are provided in the screenshots section.

my desktop is chocfull, i don't understand people who tidy it away even if an icon is seldom used, and those kinds of people don't understand me having as much as i can on my desktop. I prefer to see it as a poster on a wall type thing, i can quickly scan and get what i want.

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
this is actually really good but who seriously has that many documents "handy" at one time? Not me anyway

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
I don't see how people can say that this is a good thing
I use a computer because if just used a paper based system I'd end up chucking everything into big piles and forget about them. Then to make matters worse my mother would come in and "tidy up" and then any hope of ever finding anything again is lost. That's just a digitized version. I bet it even comes with a digital mother to "tidy up" every month.

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
It's great to look at, but not very functional as far as I can see.

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
It seems like the kind of thing you'd need to use for a day or so to get used to, but once you did that you'd wish was on every other machine you used. Looks very fluid, anyway, and intuitive unlike most of the desktop replacements that try and do similar things. Probably not as suited to a mouse as a Tablet PC but then I use StrokeIt for mouse gestures at the minute so it probably isn't so much of a stretch.
Very cool.

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
That's pretty ****ing brilliant, but what about file names and other file info? I use my desktop just like a desk, it is covered with documents, pdfs, images, power point presentations and openopen office and word docs I would find that tool useful.

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
There's this Sphere XP if anyone's heard about it. Not the same concept at all and it only just makes the desktop a 3D one but a difference.

If you want a flashy desktop, get Linux and XGL Compiz:

Re: [youtube] alternative desktop
My computer is too shit to run it, but I played with it on a friend's, and I was particularly fond of the window-switching, where they all go small and you can see everything (I think OSX can do the same thing...)

Yeah that thing is cool, but it is different from Windows OS X. On Compiz, I hate the wobbly windows. I like the zoom in, the easy window resizing, the easy tranparency changes, and 'rain'. Rain is cool.
