Round Ze World

I'm off on a rather special (in my eyes), once in a life-time trip in exactly 34 days.

I'm flying to Tokyo -> Sydney -> Melbourne -> Auckland -> Santiago -> Buenos Aires -> Sao Paulo -> London

All in the space of ~6 weeks.

To say this is a whislte stop tour is putting it mildly.

I would love to have spent a year doing it properly but there is no way i can put my life on hold any longer - I'm finishing my 2nd year of a 5 year degree and im 22 already.

What i'd like to know from all those that have been to any of the above places, or on RTW trips in general, is what tips have you got to offer?

What's the best things to see/do in these places?

I'm going with my housemate and the general intention is to get pissed quite alot however, not even i can drink for 6 weeks straight and i would consider it a huge missed opportunity not to explore said cities properly.

I've looked at all the places recommended by guides/the internet/random people but i would appreciate any extra tips about cool places to visit that are, shall we say, less likely to appear in guide books.

GD, guide me.

Ta.

Re: Round Ze World

I would love to go by ship, but i only have the summer to travel in as i must be back in uni by early september.

I suppose i mean 'once in a lifetime' as i doubt i'll be able to go again without having next to no responsibilities to worry about.

Re: Round Ze World

I spent 2 weeks in Tokyo last year, it is a wonderful place.
Go to the Imperial Gardens, it's free and you can spend several hours wandering around the middle of Tokyo hardly aware that you are in a city at all. Visit the main districts, the Ginza (the main shopping district) where you can visit the Sony building and marvel at the stuff they have to offer, Akihibara (the electronic and fanboy district, arcades and manga stores galore) visit arcades with different styles of games on each of their 7-8 floors, Shibuya (where the hip and happening kids hang out), just wander round enjoy the sites and the different culture.
For night life you might try the Roppongi district, but as this is where all the westerners go for the night it might not be what you want. Alternatively just go for drinks anywhere, most places me and my friend went we were made welcome.
The same goes for food, we went to a few different restaurants/cafes, the menu might be in japanese but there were either pictures of the food, or the waiter/waitress was more than happy to sit and explain what the meals were. We even found a couple of places with both japanese and english menus.
Price wise it seemed roughly the same as over here, food cost the same as you would expect for a nice meal over here in England, electronic goodies were cheaper(ish), cigarettes were dirt cheap, but alcohol was horrendously expensive in my eyes averaging £5 a pint (about 1000 yen).

The other place I have been to on that list is London, but I am not a fan of that place so have very little to recommend, nor have I spent more than 2 days at a time there.

I'm from near London and i'm not actually visiting it, it's just where my return flight lands.

Thanks for the advice though, i'll definitely look into what you've said; it sounds great.

Re: Round Ze World

Well I live in Auckland.

So I guess I've been there!

I suppose you won't be staying very long. I can think of better places to go and get drunk. But In saying that the nightlife isn't so bad. Most tourists start at the Viaduct Harbour and work their way through the various bars/nightclubs near there.

Tourists like the Sky Tower and Casino, the view is super and you can bungee jump off it if you feel like it. Though it's really only about 150 metres - if you were traveling down south you could jump off the Nevis Highwire which is 400m (the biggest drop in the world). But since you probably won't be leaving the city, you won't get to do that.

If you feel like seeing/walking around a nature reserve you could take a trip over to Rangitoto Island. The ferry is very cheap - it's definitly worth a look.

To be frank, most tourists don't come to New Zealand to see Auckland. If I were you I'd be booking a Bus Tour around the Coromandel Peninsula. It's the closest and easiest way to take in some of the best scenery in the northern part of the country. Something like a two day bus ride around the coast, with various stops to look at interesting nature type attractions. As long as you don't get stuck on some random Asian tour bus it would be an enjoyable experience.

Or if that sounds shit, book a harbour cruise. Or visit the student union, I'm there most days.

It can be extraordinarily expensive, but can be very cheap too. I went for a meal at a really snazzy cafe with my aunt when she visited called Cafe Absinthe in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. We got 2 starters, 3 main courses, a desert, a couple of beers, and a Kir Royale and and Absinthe Royale, in an excellent setting for about 32 pounds for the both of us. Before you go, try to research the names of a couple of gaijin bars, go to them as soon as you can, and you should be able to find a free monthly guide to Tokyo (Metropolis is the name of one of them... They might have an online edition). These usually have all the good food places, special deals, exhibitions, live music events, club nights etc in them, and are a good starting point. I usually go and pick one of these up when I visit one of the big cities.

Try to find nomihodai (飲み放題) or tabehodai (食べ放題) to keep your costs down. They stand for drink as much as you want and eat as much as you want respectively.

Tabehodai in conjunction with yakiniku (焼肉 or sometimes Korean BBQ) is always a good eat too.

But but but, Shibuya has the Punk Rock Bar; Garage Land, and I saw Shonen Knife there as well in some random club on the fifth floor of a skyscraper above 3 shops. Though you may be right about the fake tans, but when we were there it pissed down with rain so I was too busy avoiding umbrellas coming at me at eye height to really notice the people.

PS. If you are 6' plus, don't go out in Tokyo when it is raining if you value your eyesight, as literally every umbrella is the perfect height to blind you, damn those Japanese and their shortness.

Re: Round Ze World

I thought I might offer some more practical advice for when you arrive in Auckland.

I'm going to assume your accomodation is in or near the central city. In which case, you will be arriving at the airport which is ****ing miles away from the CBD. Don't take a taxi (they are NOT cheap). Instead take the Airport shuttle bus! It's blue and costs $20 (~7 quid). It takes you right to the CBD.

The Victoria Park Market is a great place to buy useless tourist shite. It's near the inner city and the shops there don't charge as much as some of the inner city Asian chain stores.

Auckland city is huge, in terms of land area it's the forth or fifth largest city in the world, and I'd imagine the public transport system (lol) would be confusing for you. If you want to go anywhere that looks 'far away' on your map, again don't take a taxi.

Another good idea might be to take a bus ride down to Lake Taupo for a few days. I'd imagine it would cost ~$70 (30 quid) for the return bus ticket, it's a great town and there are some pretty amazing things to see and do around there. Obviously this might not be terribly cost effective if your accomodation is prebooked here in Auckland. But if you are backpacking seriously get the **** out of Auckland and see the country. In most respects it's 'just another city'. A pretty one to be sure, but there are certainly other nicer things you could see/do in your week(?) here.
