International Waters
What are you allowed to do there (everything?) and can you be held accountable (anywhere other than where you're ship is registered) for anything when you get back to "land"?
Just a hypothetical question you understand.
It's not like i plan on buying a ship or owt*.
*much

Re: International Waters
im fairly sure i read somewhere as a british subject you had a 'right to navigate' the sea from the moment your born meaning that no mofo can tell you to pull over on your boat because you dont know how to sail properly.
they can when you come into port tho....

Re: International Waters
I mean, as an example, can you kill someone at sea and have nothing to worry about?

Dace, it's pretty easy to presume that if there was some sort of scam / get-off-rape-charges-free-card available relating to this it would have been widly abused by now.

Re: International Waters
I might just not have heard of it *shrug*.
And if there's not i wanna know who tries to prosecute you.
If it's the country you register the boat in then you might be able to buy your way out of "trouble" etc.

But he probably would be allowed, but to take them out there might be some form of kidnap or abduction? So when he got "back" (if at all), he'd be tried then?
None of us really know much about this area of the law, so we're all speculating. Marvellous.

I'm speculating that 'international waters' does not equate with 'lawless waters.'

Re: International Waters
lol
international waters are policed by the UN navies - and national are the coast guards and federal/national law enforcers - these waters are mainly just for navigation - only authorized personnel with special licenses are allowed to fish (fish and certain mammals) vice the national waters where local fishing licenses are the only requirement, also requires a certain size of sea vessels to sail these waters

it makes sense like that, but you are also under jurisdiction of, lets say a german frigate, if you're on a speedboat on international waters, smuggling enriched uranium from russia

Re: International Waters
There's an International Maritime Court that deals with legal things relating to international waters isn't there?
I did watch a good program on modern pirates recently where Singapore is riddled with evil types who take over ships in international waters, murder the crew and sell the boat (but none wear eye-patches or say "Arr" unfortunately)
The Singapore cops/navy/army/death squads then board the ships, beat the crap out of them and/or kill them and put the survivors on trial, so they must have some sort of jurisdiction.

Re: International Waters
Hmm...seems somewhat iffy, got a quote from a legal site.
Quote:
Is it true that nothing is illegal on the high seas, in international waters?
Answer
As near as I can tell, this is not true.. There does seem to be a fame work which was passed almost universally through the United Nations, the gest of which you can read at;
http://www.un.org/Depts/los/conventi...y%20provisions
However, this is more about right of passage, settling of disputes between Countries, (I presume boarder issues) and protection of Marine Wildlife.. Nothing really seems to be said about Piracy and the like...

It's was a legal advice forum thingy (I've lost the link), plenty of lawyers can't spell. Look at Yawhe.
And yeah, Dace...what did you want to do then?

i'm not implying a centralized navy under one organization (called united nations) - i am merely stating any sea power-capable nation will be policing the international waters because this is one of the secondary missions of any navy

Just a shame they tend to be unable to carry out whatever their primary missions may be.
Navies are shit.
This was discussed a while ago.

if by 'policing' you mean 'they may very well be there' and if by 'UN' you meant 'anybody with a boat' i am happy to accept your retraction

There is still international law, plus, in your case, taking kids aboard your ship would be considered Kidnapping.. on land.
