Re: [football]oh well
That was a harsh , harsh end to the campaign.
That said , they got there on merit, and maybe next season, under a better coach, that squad can improve.

Re: [football]oh well
The UEFA cup is such a joke competition these days; the teams in it are complete non-entities ever since UEFA started letting the top 2472 teams from every good league into the European cup.
Middlesborogh vs Sevilla, a clash of the titans indeed.

Yes, but some of these go into the UEFA cup.

Re: [football]oh well
The point is that the UEFA cup used to be a very very tough competition to win. Under the old format, Arsenal, United and Chelsea would have been in the UEFA cup. As would Real. As would numerous other 2nd -4th placed clubs. They could meet each other at any point, hence the competition was a real challenge.
The reason that we have the system as it is now, is because the big european teams all wanted to be in one big competition. The result is we have a pony UEFA cup competition and some team who finished 4th winning the so called "Champions Legaue". It's pretty absurd, but it makes clubs more money, so I doubt it will change unless big clubs say so.
I saw a rabbit in the headlights on ITV tonight this evening. My question is did they have to drag it out for 90minutes?

Re: [football]oh well
the big clubs want to change the competition so they are guarateed entry to the champions league every season no matter where they finish in the league.

Re: [football]oh well
Middlesborough didn't look to bad the 1st half. They were still outplayed. Then in the first 30 mins for the 2nd half they did ok without ever looking like scoring. Then that last 12 minutes was an embarrasment. Oh well lets hope Arsenal can represent England in Europe. I don't have that much confidence though. :/

Re: [football]oh well
if Viduka had scored, or if they had got that penalty then it wouldn't have been embarrassing and they may have won.
at least they went for it a bit.

Boro qualified by winning the Carling Cup, whilst Sevilla are definitely knocking on the door of being a very big spanish club.

was that not 2 seasons ago? did they not finish 7th 'ish' to qualify?
i think boro's luck ran out, after all they got through 2 rounds on away goals followed by 2 unlikely comebacks...
on another note, joe royle wants tommy miller back... hahaha

Yeah, you're right. They rode their luck awfully and when they came up against a good team, they got punished. It was the right result, and the better result.

Re: [football]oh well
just rename the champions league to the "elite league" or something if you have an anal problem with it.
More football = more football on tv = less boredom
There are still very good sides in the UEFA cup - think of all the champions league dropouts etc. How confident for example should Tottenham be of winning it next year? Sure, they have a chance, but its not exactly a given. Id imagine theyd be about 10/1 to lift the trophy.
