On the poll, the BBC assures us "Results are indicative and may not reflect public opinion".
How would you rate the London 2012 logo? 1887 people out of 2278 went for "Wooden Spoon". I think they probably do reflect public opinion in this case.

On the same page there is a link to a report that the olympic budget had risen to £9.3bn
I wonder how much of that has been spent on the logo design? How much does an etch-a-sketch cost these days

If you asked all the people surveyed to design a badge, they would all be shit.
Designing a popular logo is very difficult.

its a postmodern comment on the intrinsic fragility of life in the 21st century. Rejecting the meta-narratives of overt cultural unity in order to demonstrate how broken fragments interacting together can be more productive than one behemothic organism.

This is true, but it doesn't necessarily follow that what's been produced is either any good or that it provides good value for money for the public purse.

Being government funded, it probably isn't value for money.
A popular logo and a good logo are teo different things. A popular logo would be very traditional with Union Jack colours or whatever. In my limited experiance with logos I have noticed that people always seem to hate the new one at the beginning (fear of change possilbly?) and gradually get used to it and then moan when it's changed to something different.
A good logo would probably push the boundires of what people consider to be a logo and may even be a work of art. Given the rather widespread distaste among the general population for modern art it is no surprise that everyone is going to say they hate it.
I would seem rather ironic to me for the Olympic games which is supposed to celebrate the best of the best to have a symbol which revels in mediocrity and popular support.

There's the logo from the bid. It has the olympic colours, it's fairly elegent with smooth lines, and it has a direct visual link with London.

Re: London 2012
Another potential explaination is that this is an oppertunity for this company to show the whole world what they can do. As an advert you don't rellay get more coverage. to do something traditional and mundane kind of wastes the oppertunity.

Re: London 2012
#3 seems like a not so subtle hint that the Olympics is facing an emergency and we'd be better of it it left.
#5 is what I wouls expect a child to do, except the sentance underneath implies a fully-gorwn spastic.
I like #7 but only because it looks like they've burnt the flag.
#8 shot be hung, along with the person who decided to put that nonsensical image and the sacry message underneath. the same applies for #11.

It's difficult to tell. The BBC link says £400k, but it's not clear how that was arrived at, is that a total to all invoices to date to a given company, is this a specific contract, or is that figure just a vague adding up of the hundreds of people who might have been involved on some level or another with this?
Presumably something as high profile as this would be easy to put out to open competetition. Offer a £20k cash prize (or if you're feeling skint, just offer a bunch of 'free' stuff from sponsors) and then say to anyone who is looking to establish themselves in graphic design that you'll except applicants. You'll get a huge response, which you just slap onto a website. Let the public (or government staff if you don't trust the public) vote to filter out all but the top 100, and then you let some committee select a top 10 / or winner. The winner get's whatever the prize is plus the prestige of designing one of the most viewed logos in the world. Which is presumably uber CV fodder for graphic design types.

I like your reason for not liking #7 and #3 is my favourite, although it would be nice if it were a little simpler and looked like he was running away from armed police, but i guess that would be difficult given the simplicity requirement.

The sentence underneath was nothing to do with it, and I'm rather disheartened to find you didn't realise that.
They've removed it now, of course.

What? All the sentances are from the people who sent in the picture. For example #8 directly references the above picture.

Re: London 2012
I kind of like the logo in the bbc article. It looks a bit like a guy who is set for a sprint. Or is doing something very athletic.
But I'm a bit weird so not everyone might share my opinion on this one.

It looks like lisa simpson giving a blowjob, the 0 with the olympic sign is lisa's head, the 2 beneath it is her body. The 2 with london in it is the tubby guys body and the 1 beneath that is his legs. The dash is one massive cock.

Yeah thats whats so excellent about it, its all people ever see after you mention it. Apparently its even been on newsnight. Personally i think she may be tit-wanking it whilst kissing it from above, but its definitely cartoon kiddy porn in graphics.

I think it's pretty good that they're letting mentally handicapped people design the logo for the paralympics but maybe for the olympics as well is going a bit far?

wait, what? Its a logo - a work of graphic design, not art. The idea is to make something clean and identifiable which in some sense captures the essence of what you want to portray. I dont even know what it means to 'push the boundaries of what people consider a logo' or why youd want to do such a thing.
Also people hate contemporary art because the works of contemporary art that receive mass publicity tend to be atrocious. Thats a totally different issue though.

The main point here is that its disgusting.
The second main point is that Denise Lewis had to go on a stage and say;
"Its not just a logo. Its a state of mind."
non ironically and without the aid of LSD.
