Perhaps there's some particular nut oil also found in peanuts. That's what I'm asking about, not claiming that the peanut is a nut.

It's not an allergy to nuts per se, but to one or more chemical compounds that are present in nuts and peanuts. The exact compound(s) are still as yet unidentified. One theory is that nuts and peanuts have compounds which retard rotting (since they are designed to be gathered and stored by animals) and these compounds may be responsible for the allergic reaction.
