Re: What do you think I should buy?
neither imo
look into acer laptops. good price, performance and customer support.
they also look a damn sight better then those two
( the HP one is just ugly and has evil EVIL onboard graphics - not to mention the TINY 14 inch screen , the sony one you cant trust not to come with a rootkit installed as standard , wont take more then a gig of memory so you're screwed when you want to upgrade it, has a REDICULOUSLY small screen , and generally sony laptops are stupidly expensive )

Re: What do you think I should buy?
if you're looking at acer laptops, check where the exhaust ports are. some genius has put the fan outlet above the keyboard, so when the screen's closed it gets angry :/

Mainly to store my mp3s, images, a bit of photoshoping and autocad here & there on the go. Definitely not gaming (although FM2006+ is an exception). Back up my uni files on it too.
I chose the two cos they at least have memory stick slots.

Re: What do you think I should buy?
I got my Acer laptop with a card reader, had no problems there.
Try www.laptopsdirect.com , they've got a great search option which lets you totally customise what you want. Did the job for me anyway.

Re: What do you think I should buy?
I like these (am using a similar one that they don't make any more and the aftersale stuff is pretty much awesome) or if you want a big screen, these.

Re: What do you think I should buy?
You pay a premium for the Sony name but then they are built well...
If you just want it for basic things id look elsewhere at other makes tho.

Re: What do you think I should buy?
Looking at the two examples that I've given above, what other brands & models do you think I should go for then?
