Filtering
I have a really good suggestion that would make this game so much better. You should disable some of the pathetic filters. Take this passage I set as my galaxy message:
Quote:
We shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.
At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation.
The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.
Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of **** rule, we shall not flag or fail.
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
|
**** rule!? What kind of stupid crap is that? (If "crap" was censored then I'll be so angry). I can just imagine it now:
Quote:
Mr. Churchill: the odious apparatus of nazi rule
Mr. Speaker: The honourable gentleman will apologise for the use of that word.
Mr. Churchill: Yes, Mr. Speaker, I withdraw my comment. To continue, the odious apparatus of national socialist rule...
|
The PC brigade is taking over. This is stupid. What other words are censored in this fashion?

Re: Filtering
Seconded on all counts. The 'NO OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE ' bot in the irc channel is bad enough, but at least it kicks you for using actual swear words.
We're not little kids, and even if we were, we wouldn't be offended by 'nazi' for god's sake.

Re: Filtering
I dont suppose when you set about with this whole speel, that you though about someone being called a '****ing nazi bastard' or some such in an ingame message.
Although why 'suck' is censored is beyond me.

Re: Filtering
but what would it add to the game if we were able to curse and insult each other ?
Will someone please think of the children?

Oh my god someone called me a nazi over the internet! Seriously. I'm not sure that being called a "****ing nazi bastard" is any more offensive than just being called a "****ing bastard". There are a million other ways to insult someone; blocking a word just because it can be used to offend when it has other legitimate uses doesn't seem to be a very sensible thing to do. Are we blocking "Mugabe", "Ceausescu" or "Pol pot"?

Re: Filtering
The filtered words should be roughly the same as the forums and #planetarion/#support

Well ****ing is censorsed isnt it? In all honesty I think PA team and jolt probably thought the instances in which the word would be used legitamtely would far outweigh the amount of times it would be used as an insult, and as such decided to censor it. There are children playing this game you know.
If there was an abiliry for the filter to detect context, all would be fine and dandy, but alas such a thing does not exist.
As to the point of blocking "Mugabe" etc, that really isn't a valid point, as they are so unlikely to be used as a insult (or even at all ) that its hardly worth censoring the word.

Re: Filtering
There is a study stating that you don't really read the entire words to understand it, I can't find examples but I've already seen some text with letters missing in everyword, yet it was perfectly easy to understand. Filters are here more to prevent law suits I guess. Coz if you want to insult someone :
focking nazee bastard'
works just fine.
