The UK National ID Card and more
Once again the UK Government is screwing us out of money! Let me give you the costs of someone growing up who needs ID for one reason or the other
UK 10 Year Passport - ₤40
UK Driving License - ₤30
UK National Young Persons Traincard (1 year) - ₤20
You need 6 Passport Photos @ ₤3.50 for 4 = ₤8
Postage for this lot, 2nd class = ₤4
This comes to a grand total of ₤102
And now I read that on the BBC website there wanting to bring in a National ID Card at the cost of around ₤30 (even thou the production cost per card has been estimated at ₤100+).
The question I ask is what the hell is the point in having a Passport, a Driving license, all the other pieces of plastic AND something else which can uniquley define who you are.

Re: The UK National ID Card and more
1) It doesnt matter what price they are, you'll still have to pay the same regardless (a cheaper 'face price' just means more tax funds will be diverted towards them)
2) Is the main problem with national ID really the cost?

Re: The UK National ID Card and more
Yawhe - gotta reboot for the UK language settings and keyboard thing to be done
Nodrog - that means that tax is diverted from other places where its needed and the fact that we dont NEED it - we already have a unique identifier in the form of a Passport

Re: The UK National ID Card and more
The government's forcing you to carry multiple forms of ID so one day they can say: "Wouldn't it be better if we just had one form of ID, say an ID card?"

I think you misunderstood.
The ID cards cost whatever it cost to produce them. You'll have to pay all of this either directly (up front) or indirectly (through taxation). It doesnt matter whether the government is charging £5, £50 or £500 for them - the cost is still the same and will need to be paid. I suppose you could argue that a high price is a regressive form of taxation, but the poor/lowe-middle classes constitute the majority of the voting public and if they didnt want to pay then maybe they shouldnt have voted for a government likely to implement ID cards.

the traincard shouldnt be in the list above, all it entitles you to do is use the cheapy-tickets discount thing, not as a form of governmental ID

I noticed. I thought maybe it was the forum's weird font.
Either that or some Euro/Pound hybrid!

I now feel much better for having sent off my passport application on Monday, rather than putting it off another couple of months.
Thanks.

You have a 35-40% chance of having your photographs rejected btw (just preparing you for the letter).
You don't need your passport desperately urgently do you?
You know, "just asking" ;D

I did read the little leaflet thing*, so they'd better not be.
*Can't say I understand why wearing something that completely covers your hair is okay, but hey.

No, I already have an Irish one. I just figured that having two passports could come in handy if I ever want to flee the country. Not that I need to. Erm. Anyway.

Re: The UK National ID Card and more
£40 for a 10 year passport is not really a lot of money .... it's like £4 over the year and it is a unique identification ....
counted down to 1 day it is about 1-2 pence - now think about how quick you expense that MUCH money every day.

Eh?
Do you have to wear something that completely covers your hair for the new photos? Or is it just that it's "ok" to do it, if you want to?
I got a new passport in the summer. It's a Jersey one. Yay. Less red tape, all the same benefits etc

Your face must be uncovered, but it must show "your full head, without any head covering, unless it is worn for religious beliefs or medical reasons".
So if I want to wear something that covers my hair (a judicial wig, say), I can't, but a Muslim woman can. That's what's called "equality".

I always thought even Muslim women had to have their head uncovered for passport photos. Are you sure?

I'm just quoting the leaflet they sent me... It even has a picture of a woman wearing something that leaves only her face showing (it makes her look a bit like a nun) with a little green tick in the bottom right hand corner and "Good" printed underneath.

or possibly "keep your hair uncovered unless you've got a compelling reason not to"?
