Modern Political Literature

I'm looking for the names of some political or economics specific authors. I would like left and right wing suggestions as long as they aren't full of nonsence. I've read some Noam Chomsky and Milton Friedman but I don't really know where to go for a bit of variety. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Re: Modern Political Literature

Marx was left-wing.
Arthur De Gobineau was right wing. That's not really political though. More to do with class divide and race.
Alexis De Tocqueville wrote about the woes of Democracy in 'Democracy in America'
Hitler was pretty right-wing.

Re: Modern Political Literature

economics - try reading The Complete Idiot's Guide to Economics By Tom Gorman - very informative, fun and extremely enjoyable to read and are used and recommended by most universities here in the US (and this goes to all topics of interest, the Idiot's Guide books are strongly recommended )

as far as politics, all political science books are absolutely boring and they all look and sound the same to me..

Re: Modern Political Literature

My proffesor at university, Proffessor Richard Sakwa is at the height of his field in Russian Politics, a few good books by him are "Post Communism" and "Post Communist Russia", there was a guy called Khasbulatov he was the leader of the russian parliament when yeltsin was struggling for power, khasbulatov wanted to have a parliamentary system of rule rather than yeltsins super presidential rule, so khasbulatov was planning a coup, he wanted a communist system with a parliamentary rule.

However yeltsin stormed the parliament with tanks and took him prisoner. Sakwa edited his book. In Decemeber sakwa was also part of a small group of journalists and academia invited to moscow to meet putin after the bezlam disaster. Some very good reads, if u can get hold of khasbulatovs book you will enjoy it.

Thankfully I have had the honour to be taught by Sakwa for 2 years so far, and next year I hope.

Re: Modern Political Literature

I quite enjoyed the shield of achilles. It's mainly concerned with warfare, the nature of states and the futures of both.
